Every 98 including mine should have one. That came from BG engineers at the C5 registry dinner at Carlisle. Thats when I found out about it.

I read it, very interesting. Thanks! All I can say was in August of 98 Gm (BG) engineers said all 98 Vettes had recording devices in them tied into the airbag system. That in the near future they would be in the rest of the GM fleet. If I remember correctly this program started with the Vette...
It was months after that before this information appeared in newspapers and magazines.

I was involved in the development of some of the accelerometer's for the SDM back in 1993.

My understanding is that the Black Box was installed in the '97 Vette, and the added capabilities were added in the '99 model year.
Here's another link from the company that reads the info, which lists the vehicles that have The Box installed, and the location of The Box.

OK, WHAT DIFF DOES IT MAKE!!!!! let them know how the air bag popped. it was a collision. somebody messed up!!!!
the government and others are not trying to keep watch. they are trying to save lives with airbag development!!!!

i imagine if you try to disconect you will deactivate your air bags. and cause lots of questions why they did not deploy. plus some civil/criminal charges if someone gets hurt badly because of the non deployment of them!!!!

Default black box

I think anyone who really belives the box is only there for scientific reasons is naive. After more than ten years to collect data there have been very few alterations in the air bag systems. A few years ago I went thru the court system due to a serious accident. My attorney at that time told me the insurance companies and attorneys(on both sides) rely heavily on the data stored in the box. True or not, it seems to me that the insurance companies have had some effect on the decision to install and to continue to install the box.

i am pretty sure they are still finding better ways to use air bags. and will still find better ways 10, 20, and 30 years from now. kinda like every year there is a new and better version of just about any product.
as for the ins industry. why would they not want to use the info, if it helped determine who was at fault. especially in a no survivor accident situation. or a no witness accident. ok, i get the i dont like someone spying on me thing. but come on!!! get over it. its not like they come download you info while you sleep nightly

Amendment V

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Next the police will decide to pull you over and plug into your car to get it to tell them your speed then give you a ticket.

If it weren't for these posts, I wouldn't have the time to try and think up every subject then do an archive search on all of the variations of a question or keyword.
Thank you for asking the question!
I joined this forum for entertainment and some education about my C5.
It has turned out to do both.

........A Delta Jet was going to crash. There was black woman sitting next to a white guy in row 32.

The black woman starting getting undressed very quickly. The white guy could not believe his eyes. He looked over at the woman and said, "What?? Do you wanna have sex before we die". She said, "Hell no, the first thing they look for is the black box, here it is".

Sorry I had to

I for one want the "black box" hooked up. We all know LE is going to assume you were speeding cause you're driving a Vette. The box will prove otherwise. Besides imagine the suspicion if they find out you disconnected it.

It only records the last 5 secs, not the last year of data. If you're not doing anything wrong at the time of the accident I doubt they'll be able to tell.
