Here's an update!

Yesterday: The dealer talked with GM on 3 different occasions. The first two required the dealer to do a variety of diagnostics and specific voltages and ground checks. Absolutely nothing could be found amiss. The battery was tested to be sure there was not a problem there. The final discussion was "What do we do Now"? The end result, the relay was removed and the electronics were returned to stock. The lockplate was not reinstalled. The warranty remains intact. I drove it home yesterday and drove it tonight. So far-So good.

GM, the dealer, and I consider the problem resolved. Keep your fingers crossed.

It is, until the actuator fails and the BCM shuts off the fuel.

The column cannot physically lock, but the BCM has to know the actuator is in the unlocked position or it will cut the fuel.

TEXHAWK0,

Understood, but what are the chances of that happening?? The recall is for the column locking meaning the tapered lock pin doesn't disengage from the lockplate.

Isn't there the same chance that the CLB relay from COH would/could fail?

Have I misunderstood the real problem here?

Thanks,

You are right. It comes down to whether you think the actuator, which is a mechanical device but no longer in a bind, will last longer than an electrical relay.

If the actuator ever fails, you can always just plug in a relay harness to get home.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's why I haven't bothered doing ,ime/ Many will argue that is a matter of time before I regret not doing this. 5 years, no issues yet

For the first time today I had a column lock failure on my 01 vert 6MN. The flatbed was on it's way when I decided to try rocking the wheel left and right hard against the stops with the key removed. After doing this, I put the key in and started it up with the wheel free and with no failure codes. The dealer was pretty clueless and suggested it may be a battery problem. I informed him that I had just put a brand new battery in this weekend and I wasn't buying it. He wants me to bring it in but I think I'll just install a bypass. Just ordered one from http://www.thunderracing.com/

The moral of the story: Just because you haven't seen the problem yet doesn't mean you won't have one in the future. I never thought I would see this problem considering my VIN didn't come up on any of the recalls.

I had the exact same problem with my 2003 Z06 2 weeks ago.
The dealer checked everything trying to find the problem. They finally removed the K harness that they had installed in February and installed the lock bybass that I took to them. No problems since then.

I think the motor occasionally hits a dead spot and then, by rocking the feel back and forth, you jiggle the motor just enough to get it off its dead spot. Then everything appears normal with no apparent cause.

It might be sort of like a bad starter that hits a worn spot on the brushes. The car won't start. Then you hit the starter with a hammer and it jiggles the starter off its dead spot and the car will then start. The car may then start flawlessly for a long time but you know that dead spot is there and you will eventually hit it again.
