Default Tempermental trunk lid - anyone else?

I've noticed that it's not terribly easy to close the trunk lid on my vert. Basically, the only way to latch it consistently is to leave your hand on the lid the entire way down. Is this normal? Or should the latch mechanism be adjusted or something? It just seems to me that it should close easier than it does without the need for excessive velocity or other "assistance" on the way down. Thanks.

I just press firmly towrds the rear center of the lid where the latch is. No need for slamming it or anything.

I think the issue is the pressure that builds up internally.
Mine has the same difficulty with the top up. but it becomes easier if the top is down. As well if you don't have the compression of the bumpers on closure, there is nothing to pop-up the lid on opening.

So in other words, according to you guys, it sounds like I have a normally functioning trunk lid. Okay, that's all I needed to know. Thanks.

I always just leave the door open until I close it. There is a pressure release vent in the driver side rear fender that should prevent that, but it doesn't seem to work very well.

The trunklid like the hood does not like to be dropped to close. Both of them I gently lay down and then put downward pressure until it latches. Hood and trunk should not be slammed.

I do not notice this on mine, could you have adjusted the stand offs to much to help eliviate the issue with the trunk lid not poping open enough when you open it?

Lube the hinges and the latch with a little white lithium grease. Sure did the trick on mine, both for difficult closures, and failure to pop upon opening.

Sounds like a good routine maintenance procedures.

BTW, the trunk was never intended to be a "drop - latch" mechanism. It was intended to be push-to-close.

These cars are tightly sealed like the old Beetles that would float. If you slam a door, hatch (if a coupe) or the trunk lid the inside pressure will cause it to bounce back. As for the myth about not slamming the hood it isn't true. I use my hand at the center of the back of the hood to push it down until it is about a foot from closing and then slam it.

A shot of WD 40 on the latch will help both opening and closing. But. the trunk needs a good old push to close it unless the doors or windows are open.

Sounds pretty normal to me

I made a trunk pull down to gain room for an amplifier so now the trunk pops open normally but then a small motor moves the latch assembly up about an inch. Now when the trunk lid is dropped about 3-4" it latches then slowly closes. The latching pressure is less than stock now because only the resistance of the coil spring needs to be overcome.

Something else could be the problem here. I recently did the insulation and when I had the carpet removed I saw my trunk mechanism was falling of at three of the four posts. I thought there was a major body problem but came to find out the posts are held in place by clips on the inside, accessed from behind the license plate area. My trunk always closed hard, but now I am very happy with the effort required. I would say my car had a problem from day one? I would recommend trying to see if your mechanism is loose at all. You should be able to reach in by the carpet and check it out.

I know on my coupe that if a window is part way down, the hatch closes with no effort at all. Otherwise, I have to press on the rear emblem to get it to shut. May be the same with a vert - internal pressure keeps it from closing easily.
