Default Frustrated

Have had my Z06 into the dealer twice to aim the headlights. The driver’s side points down about 8 feet in front of the car and the passenger side points 20 feet ahead but dead center of the car. IN other words I can’t drive the car at night BECAUSE I CAN’T SEE. How do they adjust the lights, is it by hand with the two adjusting screws or is there a machine or something. What really get me is it’s an 80 mile round trip to the dealer. Is this a common problem with C5’s? I realize that the C5 headlights leave a lot to be desired but still they should be adjustable. Makes me thing that if they can’t adjust headlight what else can’t they do? Frustrating, now I’ve got me make the third trip.

It's a common problem with the dealer. It's called lack of care

Find a flat parking lot with a wall and do it yourself. Twenty minute job and it'll get done right. There's probably better instructions on here if you search but this is the basic run through.

Park back twenty five feet from the wall and put a piece of tape vertical corresponding to the centerline of the car. Measure from ground to center of headlight, subtract two inches and put a piece of tape on the wall horizontally at this height the width of the car. On the car measure from the centerline of the car to the middle of the low beam and put vertical pieces of tape on the wall over the horizontal line at that dimension. Turn on the high beams and adjust the hot spot vertically to the horizontal line on the wall...then switch to low beam and adjust horizontal until the rise in the beam lines up with the two vertical tapes. You're done.

I've seen some different ways of doing it, but this has worked for me on several C5's and seems to strike the best balance. Switching the fog light bulbs to 50 watt bulbs and adjusting them to fill in helps a lot too.

You can adjust them your self in less time than your one way drive to the dealer. At least they'll be done as good as possible and you'll learn a little about the car.

Here are my quick and dirty(not factory) instructions:

Tools - #2 phillips screw driver
#15 torx driver

1 Raise headlights and remove the 3 screws holding on the black cover around the lights. Supposedly you can just adjust through the one hole with the slotted screw cover, but that's hard to do. I know it's a lot easier when you can see and reach what you're doing.

2 Park your car on level ground in front of a wall or your garage door, 3' to 10' is fine. I even used the inside of my garage door during the day. Turn the adjuster screws located under and behind each light(there are 2, one for up/down, one for L/R) and observe which way the beam moves.

3 Adjust the lights so they face forward, ie left light directly in front of left housing, right in front of right. This can be hard to see with the tapered body of our cars, just use your best guess as to what is straight ahead.

4 Adjust up/down so the main part of the beam is just the smallest bit below level with the light housing.

5 Leave the black covers off, go for a test drive at night. Look for where you think you need more light. If you think your left light is a little low and your right pointing too far toward the center of the car. Stop, get out and make some small adjustments. I just tell myself left up, right out.

Repeat as many times as neccessary.

I just upgraded to the euro lights with the high wattage bulbs and harness, and I added Piaa driving lights using the stock Corvette wiring. It took me 3 times of driving home from work in the dark to get everything perfect, when doing the small adjustments. I just left the covers off and had my torx driver handy in the garage when I came home. When I made the little adjustments to get them where I wanted I didn't even check where the light was shining. I just knew I wanted lets say, left up a little. I turned the adjuster a small amount like 1-2 turns and watched the headlight assembly move to make sure I was going the right way.

The other really important issue is that you don't want to blind other drivers with your lights aimed too high. If people are highbeaming you, your lights are too high. Ideally you want them as high as you can without blinding oncoming drivers. That way you can see things are far as possible in front of you.

If you're willing to give it a shot but are unsure, you can PM me or call and I can talk you through it on the phone. It only takes a few minutes.

Looks like you got some good tips already

There are instructions at the end of the attached link which show it graphically:

The headlights are adjustable - just sounds like you need to find another dealer.

Either do it yourself or find another shop.
