I am going to be removing my wheels in order to thoroughly clean and polish them. So, I have a real stupid question...when I do that, is it safe to leave the car jacked up while I do one side or should I rest the car on something other than a 3000lb racing jack?
It won't hurt anything to leave it jacked up as long as you did it right but it's always better safe than sorry. Put something under it (jack stand) so if the jack should fall the car won't go to the ground.

I would place a jack stand under the car just in case the hydraulics in the jack give way - that way the car won't fall off and damage the bottom of the car, the brake rotor and the suspension. It will take you one extra minute to place a jack stand - why not safe instead of sorry?

Jack stands: $15-20 for a PAIR...
Placing them under whatever it is you're working on: seconds...
Knowing you're safe while working under something that can kill you? Priceless!!
Even if you are not going to be "under the car"... Do NOT ever fail to use a jack stand.
If the jack fails, why risk breaking something on your car or whatever...Don't be too stupid to use a jack stand!!!
