I think the people that are getting 30+ highway MPG all have manual transmissions.
I just went from victorville, ca back to vegas, 200 highway miles doing around 75 the whole time and I pulled 32 mpg. That's with the A4 and the 2.73 rear end. I'm turning around 1600 rpm at 70mph.
When I had my 68, back in 79, many people asked it it was brand new. I guess most people don't have a clue!
...after a while it gets old so now I tell them "I just got it" and they say...wow...(assuming it is brand new) ....most people really have no clue...they say the same thing when I drive the '95
The other day at the gas station, I had a guy in an SUV ask me if I wanted to trade. I replied "Nope, mines already filled up and yours is still empty". He got a good laugh out of that.
Reminded me of back in the early 70's when somebody pulled up beside my 69 vert at a red light and asked me if I wanted to trade. Some things never change, and that is good.
You don't really get much of that here in New Jersey, as we're not allowed to pump our own gas. Everyone just sits in their cars. Occasionally, I'll get some conversation from a pump jockey, but not very often.
I think the people that are getting 30+ highway MPG all have manual transmissions. Even with the 3.42 rear in 6th gear the RPM's are just over idle levels.
With 6 spd and cruise set on 73 mph, in 6th gear I usually get 30-31 mpg turning about 1600 rpms. Better than my 98 Ranger pickup with a 4 cyl and 5 spd on the highway .. now around town it gets better (probably I drive it different)
My best gas mileage was on 93 Octane between Rock Springs WY and Salt Lake City UT, I had the cruise Control set on 85 and just slowed down for road construction and to get gas. I averaged 30.6 MPG. Here in California with 91 octane it seems the best I can get is about 28 MPG. (I have a 2003 MN6 Vert)
6 speed / 3.42 rear gears / 1200rpm @ 55 mph gets over 30mpg - @ 70mph / 1625rpm / 29.5mpg. Two set of golf clubs in the coupe trunk and a few bags of groceries. Just incredible!!!!
I've only had the corvette (2000 TR FRC) a few weeks, so it still has the 30 day tags on it. I'm at the gas station filling it up today and the guy next to me starts asking about it. He was like "wow, it is low, has it been lowered?". I say yes, I bought it that way. He then asks, "is it an '06?" I said no, its a 2000!
He said he hasn't driven a sports car in years and points to his big SUV. He says, "they probably get the same gas mileage though." I then tell him that I get 30 mpg on the highway! His look was priceless:
He was full of questions, it was sorta cool. I guess I should expect the attention with dark wheels and headers.
do you really get 30 MPG? im upto 15.9 and i think its great

Same here. The other day some friends and I were standing around talking cars and they were bragging on how their Toyota, Honda or whatever got such and such mileage when one turned to me asking about my Vette.
When I told them 30+ on the highway, they were amazed and impressed. Of my 3 cars, it's the economy king...
Yeah... Mine is stock and I get 27.5 MPG on the freeway at 80+. I get about 22 MPG around town. I get the same kind of "man bet that thing is bad on gas mileage," crap as the guy that started this thread. Most people are amazed that my Vette is doing as good or better than their Honda, or whatever.

Love your avatar man. It was a sad day when The Great One died.
we bought a 2000 a4 coupe in virginia and drove back to ohio [app. 550 miles] and got app. 26 miles/gal. at about 70 mph. i'm assuming that is the best one can do with a 3.15 ratio even though i read of folks getting 30+. yes, no , comments ?????
I saw 29.5 at about 65-70 on a trip from DFW to Boston, bone stock w/ 3.15s at the time. Same trip in the SUV saw about 17.5.

Do Headers improve the gas mileage? For that matter, is there any Mod to help improve the gas mileage?
