James here in Michigan, and I'm looking to buy my first Vette. I currently own a Benz 560 SEC and looking to sell or trade to acquire 97 or newer black vette. Not sure what I should be looking for in terms of best years, trans, tops, etc. Any advice you can provide will be helpful.
Thanks

Welcome to the madness. Took me 2 years from the day I decided I wanted a C5 until I finally got my Z06.
There's no real "best years" since this is a relatively trouble-free vehicle. Take your pick between the coupe, FRC (fixed-roof coupe), Z06 or the convertible.
For me, the choice was clear. I had to own the best performing model out there, so I got the Z06.
Whichever your choice, you will not regret owning America's best sports car!
greetings james----------at one time or other we were all newbies. if you don't mind a few thoughts in no order, here goes: get the newest car with the lowest miles in the best condition that you can afford. a4 vs m6 is purely based on the buyer's preference & convenience. both are great performers. look at lots of cars. when you hone in on 1 or several be sure to run a carfax on them; you can usually get them free in the c5s for sale section. coupe vs vert vs frc is also a matter of huge personal preference & to some extent, perhaps based on where you live (sun climate vs northeast). best of luck. there is nothing on planet earth like owning & driving your c5. bub
Go to the "Weights, measurements, ratios, strengths, etc" Sticky on the top of C5 General.....It will give you some useful tips regarding buying a C5. Good luck with your search.
Like everyone has already said. It just depends on personal preference. I went with the FRC cuz I didn't wanna pay the extra 5-6K for the ZO6 and insurance is cheaper too. Just look at a couple colors to see which is your favorite.
