Default Ranting... Porsche Drivers v. Vette Drivers

Why in the world are Porsche drivers so unfriendly?!? This morning a very sharp & detailed 911 pulls into the underground garage where I park. The exhaust is raspy and echoing off the walls -- sounds great. So As were waiting for the elevator, I say with a smile, "that exhaust sure sounds great down here". His response:

"uh. yea."

No smile, no nothing. So awkward silence ensues, and I try again. "have you seen that Cayman that's been parking down here? Looks sharp." His reply (sounding bored to death):

"I hear those are pretty small inside."

SO, I'm now just DYING for the elevator to get to my floor so I can put this all behind me. But it's not the first time I've been snubbed by a Porsche guy. One time I park next to one that had just taken an end spot near a restuarant, and as i get out of the car I say "I got you protected on this side." He looks at me and kinda grunts.

WTH!!! I can only imagine what it must be like to go to a Porsche Club GTG -- it must be a bunch of guys standing around not talking to each other. GRRR....

Anyway, I'm done ranting. It really makes you appreciate how cool and friendly the Vette community really is. Just yesterday I was having a 5 minute carside conversation with another forum member in a local parking lot and another Vette drove by, rolled down the window and shared a few pleasantries. I love the looks and quality of 911s, but I'd never trade you guys just to have a Porsche.

When a porche pulls up next to me they try not to catch my eye, they only one who wanted to act as if he had something changes his mind when I punched it and my exaust kicked in and my car took off. I think they feel inferior like a guy with small (erm) hands. So just smile the I own a Corvette smile and feel sorry for him/her.

I guess the Porsche guys are way to cool to talk to vette guys I generally just ignore guys in high end foreign cars. Its too bad really since I think there should be a natural bond between guys who love high performance vehicles regardless of the make and model.

Maybe he's not a car lover and just bought the Porsch to fit in with his clique.

I totally agree. Like no matter the car, it's the attitude. Like whenever I pull up next to a Mustang with a big exhaust, I give them the thumbs up or compliment the noise their making. And 99% of the times they'll return a compliment. We're all car guys, just with different preferences.

having a porsche is a status symbol. not saying that there arent die-hard porsche guys, but i have a feeling many porsche owners buy the cars for their image. they need something nice and sporty to drive to their office everyday in their business suits. getting out of a $45,000 corvette just doesnt cut it for them.

Yeah, I get the feeling this is the case. If you want a screamer that you can work on and be proud of because you're a performance car enthusiast, you probably aren't buying a Porsche. The Porsche is for people with money who like [relatively mild] speed.

My neighbor a couple of houses down has pretty nice 911, he got a new engine last year and it sounds really good . He does not drive it much though When I bought my Vette last year, and he came running over like a little kid going to a candy store He babbled like a teenage girl about how much he likes the Vette’s . It was great, he is just a car guy not a porsche snob…

There are plenty of car enthusiasts in P-cars. Check out a PCA track day, lots of good people.

However there are plenty of Porsche owners who just bought the car to say they own a Porsche. They are usually the same people who hate watercooled models and think a 82 911 is faster than a 951.

Yeah I think you ran into an IJAC, not an enthusiast. Bought the Porsche for the name, but probably doesn't know anything about it other than "its cool and the ladies like it".

I bet he was a previous Corvette owner, probably had a C6. I hear they never wave. Neither do C3 owners. Nor C2, C4 or C1 owners. Even C5 owners never wave. Everyone is turning into unfriendly slackers!

What is this world coming to?

Sometimes, no matter what you do, some people just won't open up. Sounds like the Porsche guy was one of them. Oh well, his loss.

too. Vettes are #1 in my book, but I appreciate and get excited about all performance cars whether its a Mustang, Porsche or a Sub STI or EVO. I love going to Atco Raceway just to meet other car owners and talk shop.

I have to agree with most here. I think the Porsche guy you ran into as with a small minority of Vette owners just bought the car to own a "look at me and the money I have" sports car. They haven't loved Vettes since they were a kid like me and many of us.
