Beware 2002 owners , I was driving to the California coast today and the %%#@### car gave me a steering column code and would not run above 1 mph without cutting out. Seems that the security system didn't like something about the column lock after we stopped for a coke. It cost me $ 150 to have it towed from the middle of nowhere and ruined our weekend. I really like this car but GM needs to get their S**t together and fix this problem once and for all. I tried pulling the battery cable and removing the body control module but nothing worked. This is your worst nightmare IE a car that can't be driven, and you don't know when it will grab you. The GM service people told me that they had three other Corvettes today with the same problem. So fellow Z06'ers watch out!
WTF!?! I would have figured that the 2002s would all be 'safe' with this issue since there was a recall on the damn thing recently. Time to order the by-pass .... sheeez
Although it's not a Z06, my 1999 C5 coupe was immobilized when the steering column lock failed. My wife and I were driving out-of-state on vacation and were stranded for three days. Chevrolet towed and repaired the car under the new car warranty.
This is s VERY WIDESPREAD problem that Chevrolet ignored for years. It is also just one of many design defects that have taken years for Chevrolet to change or fix.

Re: Streering Column Lockout (1999 White C5 Coupe)
I would suggest that you folks out there handle this problem before it handles you. I installed the bypass kit from C5 Solutions in about as hour &
it works as advertised. Sure beats a night in a motel. :yesnod:
Well, it is day 4 and no progress, the dealer said that there were jobs ahead of mine and he was not able to work on it till tomorrow. I pulled the lower IP cover and checked the connector to the steering column lock motors and unfortuately found nothing wrong. I am appalled at the attitude toward getting this 3 week old 1000 mile car fixed. You would think GM would want to know if the problem is still out there but so far no interest. I will pick it up in my trailer and take it to another dealer if they don't get something done by Wed AM. This is such a greatcar it deserves better dealers than are out there.
