Default Tire Size Question

What is the advantage go to 18 inch rims on both the front and back. I have noticed on the Vendor pages this is an option.

there is no "advantage" - it's a matter of eye appeal.

I would respectfully disagree. If you went with an 18" front wheel and a concomitantly lower profile tire (eg., 35 profile), your turn-in will be a bit crisper because of less sidewall flex. Of course you might have a bit more unsprung weight depending on your wheel/tire combo. While I'm sure the engineers are able to consider the various combos, they also have more parameters/compromises with which to be concerned. I can tell you that a friend of mine happened to have a conversation with a GM engineer who was involved with the suspension design for the C5, and the engineer acknowledged that 18"s all around worked well from a perfromance standpoint. Of course, the designers preferred the staggered look, and if I recall correctly, the engineers didn't want to go to an 18-19" combo because of the resultant increased unsprung weight.

One of the few good things that can be said of the factory runflats (from a performance perspective) is that they offer excellent turn-in response (because of their stiff sidewalls). Running 18's up front allows you you to go with a lower profile non-runflat which, by virtue of the shorter sidewall, allows you to retain turn-in response without any of the negatives associated with runflats. Even though the 18" wheels weigh more, you typically break even (or even save weight) by going to lighter non-runflats.

Of couse, you could always run 18" runflats up front, but then the only "advantage" is cosmetic and the ability to run bigger brakes.
