Default AC Problem, Please Help!!

My ac controls aren't working in my 98. It turns on, uses the difference speeds, changes temp, but when i switch it to feet or defrost it just stays on vent. I pulled it out thinking it may just be unplugged or something but everything is fine. Anyone come across this problem or have any ideas?

It sounds like the vacuum line used to control the vent settings may have a hole in it. The most likely place is in the engine compartment where it enters the firewall or where it connects to the vacuum source. I believe it enters the firewall on the passenger side below the battery area, so you should be able to trace it from there.

Check and make sure your battery hasn't leaked and ate through the vacuum lines running in the wiring harness under your battery. I had this happen in my '98 and it was a nightmare. The vacuum line will run into a little valve right up under the passenger side. If you follow the vacuum line from under the battery down towards the bottom of the passenger side/front rocker, you will run into this valve. Mine was ate all up and had holes all in the vacuum line from where battery acid had leaked and ran down the hoses. You will have to remove the inner part of the passenger side fender well closest to the cabin to probably see this valve. Goodluck finding it. This may or may not be your problem, but it's a start.

Has the car been hooked up to the "dealer" computer lately? My heat/ac went completely goofy. Re-hooking fixed it. Too bizarre.

If the intake manifold has ever been off, there's a possibility the small 1/8" nylon vacuum line on the backside is loose/disconnected.
