Fortunately, I keep my feathers numbered for just such an emergency. - Foghorn Leghorn

Well, here's what I found out.

Bearing in mind that this was a 35.00 shifter, plus 15.00 for shipping from that unmentionable auction site, I had fairly low expectations. I knew there were some issues right off the bat, the shifter **** is a 5spd **** (one of the reasons he marked it down), and there were no instructions.

So I opened up the package and was fairly surprized, the unit itself was well made, the chroming of the retainer plate was so so, but the **** and shaft were actually very nicely done with red numbering. The only questionable area was/is a nylon washer that is at the bas of the shifter that I suspect will wear quickly, but its a .35 part tops.

Install was fairly straightforward, like any number of shifters out there, took about an hour since this was my first Y-body install. I buttoned things back up and took it out for a short blast from 0 - to low triple digits and the shifter performed very well considering its price. Feedback was firm and uneventful. The throw takes slightly above average force, about the same as other M6's I've driven.

As for missing shifts, I've had exactly 2 incidents in the driving today. I accidently downshifted into 2nd instead of 4th, and popped out of reverse one time coming out of the driveway. The shift was me, the reverse issue is my hellacious detent, which I'll mod this weekend. The **** is a standard 9/16ths fine thread, so any number of shifter ***** will fit it.

I hate(d) the stock C5 shifter with a passion, so this is a viable alternative. We're not talking Space Shuttle engineering here, its a pretty basic fulcrum/lever in the big scheme of things. The only gripe I have is that the **** seems to radiate heat from the tunnel. Can't say for sure that its from sunlight, cause the car is heavily tinted.

Would I do it again? Sure its a inexpensive mod that made a world of difference. I do believe in getting what you pay for, but I also believe that there are always different ways to skin a cat.

Well, I was quite happy with the stock shifter in my C5,,just not the height.. So for about 5 minutes invested to take a hacksaw and shorten the lever by almost 1 inch, 5 minutes with a Dremel to lengthen the **** key slot (all done with a plastic back taped around the lever to catch metal filings)...PRESTO..shorter shifter, smooth action, and zero cost. I had been lusting for a Hurst or B&M...not any more..

Another no cost way to lower the **** is to carefully drill it out so it'll screw further down on the shaft. You'll end up lowering about an 1".

Yes, I also cut down my shift lever, and tapped a heavy red cue ball (9/16-18) and put a red leather boot on. Shortening was free, the cue ball was $5 and the boot was $20, shifts great without alot of effort....voila!

Default Thanks

Kelly, thanks for taking the time to post your findings. I found it interesting and informative. I just swapped out my metal shift **** to my summertime wooden one. Much more comfortable in the hot weather.

I've got the C6Z shifter in my 02 vert & love it. The C6 **** is leather with a metal shift pattern which can get hot in the sun/heat. I always keep a hat in the car; it sits on the shifter when parked.
