Default 1 to 4 Shift Light

Could someone explain the purpose of this light and why it comes on? Mine has come on a couple of times when the engine was hot ( 220-230 ). Is there an overide proceedure to avoid this? Should I leave it alone? What are the consequences? My 2004 Z06 and I appreciate your advice.

the cags switch that disables your 1 to four shift does not disable the light. it's not worth messing with. just my $.02

CAGS (Chevrolet Assisted Gear Shifting) - It comes on when you attempt to shift from 1st to 2nd and your speed/rpm is too low. It forces you to shift into 4th. I think I heard it's there to avoid the Gas Guzzler Tax?? Anyway there is a CAGS defeat that can be bought for less than 20 bucks that takes 2 minutes to install.

I hated this feature and couldn't defeat it fast enough! I don't think my 1-4 light comes on any more. I will have to look.

My Best,

Drive the car like it's meant to be driven and you'll never see the light, except when you start the beast.

My Best,

I have it disabled but my light still comes on, if you have it tuned the tuner can just delete it.

My over-ride for the 1 - 4 shift light feature (aka CAGS) didn't cost me a dime...press hard(er) with right foot.

Actually I drop the car into 4th when traffic conditions dictate it, then I'll go to 6th..I swear this thing is making gas in 6th gear! I can see the MPG just roll up like an odometer.

I totally agree! In the 3 years since purchasing my Z06 CAGS has engaged maybe 3 or 4 times. It's no problem to rev the engine up a bit more before shifting to avoid CAGS from doing its thing.

Never seen any warning light but mine has yanked into fourth instead of second several times now. Only been driving it a few weeks.

I don't think this explanation about low RPM is correct. It does not happen to me when I am driving easy. It happens to me when I jack rabbit first gear. I think it is speed related, perhaps wheel RPM, but not engine RPM. The computer appears to be saying "this is the speed for shifting into fourth".

She bogs down pretty bad when it happens since I was in the process of stomping through the gears, I need to adapt until I can get a bypass. I think what might work is to slam it back up into third before letting the clutch out in fourth. It's pretty obvious to me when it pulls down into the wrong notch. I'll try that next time.

I just use it when in comes on. It has never messed me up, just probably saved gas and two gear shifts! I think its kind of cool and I am by no means conservative w/ my driving. I havent figured out exacty what triggers it but it only comes on once or twice during my normal 50 mile daily drive.

Anyone know how it works?

OOPs! Sorry for the wrong term, Chevrolet vs Computer. I say that all the time as CAGS makes little to no sense to me and I doubt that any other maker has/uses it and it's Chevy specific.

Gents, I drive mine my way and CAGS don't cut it for me!!

it comes on when you are in 1st gear and attempting to shift between 2000 and 2500rpm. the reasoning is better fuel economy. either shift under 2000 or over 2500 in 1st to avoid

I installed the CAGs elimnator, but then later after a few more mods, had it tuned and he deleted it. He went ahead and programed the light to act as a shift light, now at 6800 rpm it comes on and says "shift dummy!"

When my car was dyno tuned, my tuner shut it off for me. It is a horrible PITA and I'm glad its gone.
