I'm surprised that the light only comes on sometimes for you guys. It should come on every single time you accelerate for the most part unless you're racing. I have my CAGS disabled but the light still comes on every time I hit 2000RPM until I hit 2500PM, then it turns back off, unless I'm giving it decent throttle.
Basically if it comes on (and you don't have the !CAGS mod), you can just accelerate past 2500RPM and it will go back off and you can shift into 2nd.

I finally spotted that 1 -> 4 shift light. Now that I have been paying it some attention it seems my short shifting of 1st is causing the situation. I am hitting the throttle plenty hard, just not running into high RPMs, too big of a hurry to hit second where it has more grunt. Shifting even quicker or just taking off in second from a slight roll resolves the problem.
Oh, and I tried that jamming into third from fourth without letting the clutch out. Works plenty good with an extra rev during the throw.

There's an intersection right next to this coffee shop I always go to. Anyways, I always get stuck at the red light. The driveway for the coffee shop is about 50' after the redlight. When I first got the car, I was getting pretty irritated they I'd be forced into 4'th, then have to slow down for the drive way and work my way back to second and then make the left turn. Now all I do is shift 1 to 2 at 1,900 RPM at this intersection and the CAGS doesn't kick in.

I'm sure a Sr. Member will correct me if I'm wrong; but I recall reading that the CAGS is a device utilized by GM to gain a certain low emissions/fuel efficient rating from the feds.
I rationalize this as another way GM is trying to keep the price down for the end user; in this case potentially avoiding a luxury/sin tax type surcharge Uncle Sams minions would try to throw at us if this device, along with others, were not in place.
I must admit, it has caught me a couple of times; i don't particularly like it either.
Drive it like it's YOURS!

When I first got my C5Z, the 1-4 engaged quite a bit. As I've grown used to the car, it NEVER goes on anymore. Just wind it a little higher before you shift.

Got mine tuned to come on at 6700rpm as a shift light

I think this one wins the "most innovative" award for actually turning something quite irritating into something useful

I don't see why people adjust their driving for this. It's a ridiculous system. Yes I understand it served a purpose (fuel efficiency), but it was the first thing to go on my Firebird, and will be the first thing to go on my Z06.
If I wanted the car to decide what gear I should be in, I would have bought an automatic.

I have never seen my 1 to 4 Shift-Light come on ever.
I'm assuming that the prev. owner installed CAGS eliminator.
light comes on when:
- The engine collant temp. is higher than 169 deg. F.
- You are going 15 to 19 mph and
- You are 21 percent throttle or less.
I will try to duplicate the above conditions to see if my light comes on. Maybe I just don't ever drive tercel-style.

It will come on when you are doing a crawling start and you shift up at low speeds as it was mentioned by other people above. If you take it to 3k rpm before you shift to 2nd you'll have picked up enough speed that you will no longer meet the 1 to 4 condition and CAGS will not bother you.
