A4 w/3.15

My driving is mostly city/suburban but I do get out in the country a bit.

I thought I would miss having the 6 speed - In general, I don't.

However, If you're planning to autocross it or drive in the twisties, then IMO an M6 is a better fit.

In a straight line, I doubt that most people can realize a performance advantage in an M6 vs an A4 (unless you're Ranger ).

For me, it's plenty quick and I can drink coffee while I drive.

My $0.02

I have a 6 speed, but have driven the A4 with 315 and 273 rear end on several ocassions of fellow Vette friends.

If you mainly drive in the City, then get the A4 , it kinda sounds like you already have your mind made up.... but make sure you get the 315 gear (option code G92 in the glove box) or you will be disapointed with the stock 273 gear..that's just my .02 I say that because you are concerned with acceleration and gearing so I assume you want a good gear. You can upgrade the A4 to a 342 or even 373 if you want more.

Good luck

I've been driving a manual daily for the past 8 years in all types of traffic. A couple of times an automatic would have been nice (wrecks on 85, etc.) but I like to row through my own gears. I think you would be happy with the 6 speed.

You can row a slush box. It just depends on the slush box

I’ve had only manuals for the past 20 years, and bought a A4 coupe. I thought I may miss it, but I don’t really. Sure, I don't know what a MN6 is like in a Vette, but I do not miss it.

Been starting to take it to the track, and honestly I think for Autocrossing and some road tracks it is very good. The road courses I’ve been doing have been with NASA, so it is not only Vettes on the track. I find I shift just about as much as some of the import guys on the same track, just because its and automatic does not mean you can’t shift it. 2nd and 3rd for most of the track, I find it rockets out of corners well and 4th for the long straights. From some of the comments I’ve heard, the 6th gear on a MN6 is mostly for fuel economy, not performance. That is you do not get top speed in 6th. So, its really the difference between 4 and 5 gears.

I have the 3.15 rear, Haven’t had it above 140 yet though… But it seemed to pull ok at 130

My driving is mostly in town and I really enjoy shifting although I'm rarely in the car for more then 20 minutes at a time. I also appreciate getting 31.5 mph @75 in sixth gear when I do drive it out of town, which makes the people I work with heads explode. Even though they know nothing about these cars, the assumption is it must be a real gas hog since its a Corvette.

You won't lose any Highway speed.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I will admit, that my A4 with the 3:!5 gearing pulls very well passed 140. Of course, I have heads and cam, torq converter and more and the car runs very well. I had a M6 in my Z28 with a CAM/intake and exhaust and my vette with an A4 and smaller gears would rip that car apart.

I like my A4...even over 140, you stomp on it and it climbs just like it does from 70-130... I'm running 2.73's....

But my next one will be 6 speed.... just for the change...

...and as long as it's not my DD...

A4 with 3:42 Here! A definite improvment over my 3:15s but not by much. I do hard mountain runs often and 3:42s keep me in the power band much better.(4000 to 5500 RPM) I still wish I had a MN6 instead!

Its interesting. I learned to drive on a manual and drove my mini cars with 5 speeds for years in heavy traffic. The vette is much easier and smoother and the action is so "automatic" that I don't feel the need for hydro/mechanical assistance. Its not a performance thing - the A4's are fine. Just a fun thing.

I drive my MN6 when I DON'T have to drive in heavy traffic situations and drive my auto-tranny car when I DO. It's that simple.

You'll like the mn6, until the first time you race a 3.42 equipped A4 through the quarter mile and he takes you by 2-4 cars OR MORE.

Comparably equipped A4's own the mn6's through the quarter mile on the track.
Furthermore they're far more consistant on time.

Just last night I ran a WS6 trans am on a time trial. WS6 equipped ( exhaust, intake, 6 speed).
It was a brutal slaying........he was beaten by 1.5 seconds and about 10 car lengths.

This was with traction control turned ON.
The lanes are not wide enough, and my car goes squirrley when it hits second gear laying a posi traction line down about 30 feet long when traction control is turned off. It'll run the quarter faster with traction control off since there is no fuel shut off ocurring , however you put yourself in a danger zone to hit the wall.
I'd rather sacrafice a few tenths than wall out.

As far as reprogramming , its a piece of cake for a good tuner who installs a 3.42 in a previously equppied 2.73.
He will also bump your redline/rev limiter, up up a bit so when your rpms drop on a shift, they dont drop as far and youre closer and quicker to your power band.

Straight line 1/4 mile , or from red light to red light, the comparably equipped A4 owns the mn6's. This is a fact.

Road courses are better served up with a 6 speed.

I drive a 5spd Mustang (go aheald flame lol) daily built up a bit with a few mods, and the C5 vert is an auto. While I love rowing gears in the Mustand, it just sucks in Chicago traffic, I would much rather be in the vette letting it do the work. The auto pulls to well over 150 with the top down, as well as it can bark 2nd gear if need be. Sometimes I wish it was a 6spd but the auto is nice its just easier and its what I got the car for to be able to cruise, and the girl can drive it if need be.

Wow, I never expected to get so many responses. Im glad to see a lot of you guys like your autos and ive pretty much convinced myself that the auto is what I need. I know that on occasion I might miss the mn6 but, city driving is a pain and I need something that will cope. I also really like the consistency of the auto. Powerbrake and go. MN6 requires so much practice to get a good launch technique down and it seems really hard on the car.

I recently returned from Italy. The family I stayed with had this small Ford 4cyl with a stick. I asked why I never saw a stick shift car in their province Frosinone. The neighbor in the apartment next door told me (she is like 18) that the autos cost too much there and they are for "retards." She was serious and told me this in English, though I can speak Italian. I started laughing... my o1 vette is an auto
