Default Hatch Closing Issue

I was just wondering if this is normal: when all the doors are closed and the windows are up, i have to give the hatch a pretty good slam to get both catches to close...when the doors are open or the windows down the hatch almost closes itself. Plus, sometimes when i slam the hatch, the change in air pressure causes one of the windows to pop over the roof retainer...any thoughts?

In the rear compartment on the drivers side, pull back the side carpet and you should see a square shaped (cabin) pressure relief valve. Check to see if it is working properly. If not, it may need to be replaced. For a '99 coupe looks like GM Part # 10285751. Good luck.

Edit: Just noticed, but it looks like the above P/N has been replaced by P/N 10339669. You may want to verify correct P/N with your local dealer.

Sounds pretty normal to me. My 2004 coupe has been that way from day 1. Just press down on the emblem to push the hatch all the way closed. That way you don't fingerprints everywhere.

You could try placing your hands on both sides of the hatch and gently but firmly pressing down to latch.

Leave a door open when closing the hatch and it will close easy.

alright, thanks guys, ill check the valve but probably just the way it is...i never really noticed that you dont have to even apply any force when the door is open...it just kinda pulls itself closed. (as mentioned above...i usually just latch it then press on the emblem)

OR, try this: Leave a door open, then still close hatch gently. Frankly, there is no need to SLAM the hatch.

I've never slammed mine shut. Just lower it until it rests on the latches, place a hand above each latch and press. It latches nice and easy, no stress on the hatch or latches, and no air issue.

I've never heard of this either... is this "valve" located on the floor portion or the rear wall of the trunk?

agree w/ the others that this is perfectly normal. we close the hatch gently &, fingerprints notwithstanding, push gently down in each corner to latch securely. bub

I've had to leave one of the doors open when closing the hatch since I bought this '04.

I always open a door prior to closing the hatch. I don't like having to slam it, to get it to latch

Hmmmmmm. I usually ease my hatch down and push it lightly to secure it. No slamming. And I NEVER push on the emblem. They will more quickly decide not to stay stuck in the car if you push on it whenever you close the hatch. I wonder if some adjustment in yours is warranted, so you don't have to slam it?

According to my previous owner, thats just due to the integrety of the seals- they seal the car up so well that you are fighting the air pressure. Of course, if this is the case, and if there is a cabin pressure release valve, either mine isn't working, or it is set to release at a pressure greater than what it takes for me to close the lid. At any rate, all I do is gently press it down with my palms and it closes, just be firm but gentle.
