OK.... that's what I believed and a good buddy told me the same thing...
How tight is that thing supposed to be on there? I read the service manual on it, but there's no mention.... and it's hard to tell since this cap doesn't "click" once it's tight enough... I just hand tightened... didn't turn it any harder once it stopped... Before, I tightened it a little more, was I over-tightening it?
Thanks for the info... I think I'm ordering a new one today. GM Parts Direct, here I come!

I just hand tighten maybe a quarter turn once it contacts the reservoir.

UPDATE
I had a stealership nearby that had one in stock (only $3 more than GM Parts Direct) so I went and got it (the parts guy tried to convince me my cap was not OEM )...
Ok...so now this is a new question for me...
The new cap is apparently the right part number, but it's got a 18 PSI threshold instead of the stock 15 PSI...
I Googled it and found some info which confirmed this (Z06Vette.com), I guess GM didn't put out a bulletin, which leave me wondering if the added pressure will have a ill affect on the surge tank....

18 lbs is the new replacement pressure. No ill effects at all on your tank.
Also, make sure your system is completely full. No air at all if possible.

Robert

By system... do you mean even the surge tank?

Yes, pretty much so. I keep my surge tank filled almost right up to the underside of the little "grill" you see when you take the cap off.
Not too long after I changed my waterpump, I noticed my upper hose partially collapsing after cool-down too. After a new cap, and adding more coolant mix to the level I mentioned above, no problems at all.
BTW, I think there may have been a little excess air in the system as well.

Ok.... Good info.... thanks for your help Robert...
I installed the new cap... I'll take the car out and let you all know what happens... Thanks for your effort...
happened to me once(that i know of) sitting in my friends driveway that slopes with the hood up and noticed it. never happened again though and went away once i turned the motor over. mine was just a fluke i guess
I wonder if the hose is bad. It shouldn't collapse like that.
I've seen a hose do this in the past and it's generally due to age or a defect in the material. How's the coolant level, this also could happen if its low?

My 98 and my son's 02 both have this issue with the top hose. I will be watching to see if this fixes the problem. We are both taking our cars to Andy's in about 2 weeks and I don't want to have any problems.

Will do....
And for anyone who may run into this... here's a couple of comparative shots to help avoid the shock ...
