Default Column Lock Finally Happened !!!!!!

Now I am pissed. The other day I got in to my car started it steering wheel remained locked And I said "Oh sh#$$t now I`am f#$$ed" and I turned the car off wait 10 seconds tryed agained nope nothing.I checked the battery connections, waited another 20 minutes but couldn`t make it worked.Any how I called my body Serkan(BAMF AE).Told him what happened he said "Turn the car off open your driver side door and jerk the steering wheel hard,it might work".Than I did exactly what he said(Thans to him) than It worked.Anyway the next day I took it to the dealership I knew there was a recall about this problem, they told me they`r gonna take care of it but car has to stay 2 days in the shop wtf .Than when we walked to next to my car I told him to be careful when they work with it because it`s lowered on stock bolts.Than he gave me the great news since it`s lowered on stock bolts they can not drive on to the lifting machines.I said can`t u use floor jack to lift it up they ve done it when they were changing the tires. He said sorry can not do it because all 4 wheels should be on the air to fix the problem.I said"this doesn`t make any sense how come u can use 3 floor jacks 2 for the front one for the rear.".Anyway to make the story short.Since it was a recall problem he didn`t want to help. And I didn`t want to leave my car to the people who don`t wanna solve the problem.Because I thought they might even cause a bigger problem. Then I left I don`t know everytime I start the car,for unlocking the steering, wheel I have to jerk it to the right. should try a different dealer or shouldIbuy the by pass kit and install my self.Any opions will be helpfull sorry for the long thread guys
Pasha.

Hey Pasha,
this is the third horror story that I've heard in the last week about column lock problems. This is enough to convince me to buy the bypass kit and get this taken care of.

I wouldn't let a Chevy dealer with that attitude touch my car. I bet the others will be the same. I recommend the bypass kit.

Good luck,
Coz

Dude, this CL is a pain in the a$$. I had mine done by the dealer and they resolved the problem that day. Many on the forum have done the change themselves. If you are mechanically inclined, then do it yourself. SEarch the forum, you will find info on how to install the CLB.

Good Luck!

Default 2001+ Autos Have This Fixed . . . Right?

If I read the recall correctly automatic tranny cars from 2001 forward don't have this problem. Correct? What year is your car?

Pasha,

I would go ahead and buy the Column Lock Bypass - I have it on mine and have not taken the car in for the recall.

thunderracing sells a quality piece. sooo easy to install...30min tops no more CL problem for the life of the car.

oh and for the next moron to tell you its not possible to lift a lowered vette, school them by saying all you need is to jack the rear as high as possible with floor jack and all 4 arms will clear the frame.

Default They don't have to lift the car to do that...

do they? I put my column lock bypass in, myself, and at no time did any of my four wheels leave the ground!

Sorry to hear of your problem, but anyone who reads this forum for any length of time should know:

1) This is a common problem
2) It's "when", not "if" this will happen to YOU!
3) GM has failed us completely on this issue

Good luck,

That is a bummer. Gm said they did my recall but, I went ahead and bought the CLB just in case. I have heard of it locking even after the recall has been done.

get the clb or go to a better dealer. i just had mine in for the recall, the first dealer i went to has lost my business FOREVER!! they did the first recall and when i had a problem with it again they did not check to see if there was a second recall, they just stated that they would be more than happy to sell me a new actuator for $400. i told the service writer where he could stick the actuator and left. i called a second and much smaller dealer and they were more than happy to fix the problem under the recall. the service manager said he was not very familiar with the problem and would get with the tech to research it. i explained that i wanted the flash from the first recall taken out so if there is a future problem i will not have to worry about anything other than a code that can be reset. they will be taking the lock plate out and putting the original flash back in so the fuel shut off will also be taken out of the loop making it drivable should the k-harness fail. more than likely i will put the clb in also. i am currently selling the car but i am going to do it so the new owner will not have to deal with it in the future.

I'm also guilty of not dealing with the Column Lock issue. I've read many posts about it, but never experienced it on my car. I figured I'd wait to see if it happens. Recalls are forever aren't they?

You do not have to lift the car to fix the column lock. The first recall just made matters worse for people with the 6 speeds. It just cuts your fuel when it detects a problem with the steering lock whether real or perceived. The second recal (Feb 06) is still a problem although they do remove the locking plate. The K harness they use has been shown to be defective. I think they have a newer version out now.

Bottom line...CLB.

Go ahead and buy the bypass kit. It takes about 30 minutes to install and you won't have to worry about this issue again. Got mine from Thunder Racing.

Looking forward to reading your post. Let us know where it happened, where you were planniing on being, and what you missed out on as you were waiting for the flatbed to come.

I put the CLB in a couple of weeks ago and I can't tell you how relieved I am about it. It was too easy to do, so stop procrastinating!
