TOP TIER Gasoline Retailers:
QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations
MFA Oil Company
Kwik Trip/Kwik Star
The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
Chevron-Canada
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Company
Shell-Canada
Amoco / BP & Mobil / Exxon are not on the list.
I tend to stay away from Shell here in the SE do to the higher sulfer contents.
Most patrolium stations get their fuels from a central suppler ( Colonianal Pipeline Inc) then add their special ( drop in the lake) additives. Soo no real difference between brands, expect price

Top tier gas is good in that the folks involved have put their "good" detergent and additive package in all of their fuels. Most all premium gasolines have a good additive package from the start.
Having a good detergent in the gas is very important. What it does is keep your injectors clean. If your injectors are clean, you get a more even fuel flow to each cylinder... Why is that important you ask? Well, since you have only one oxygen sensor per bank, it is going to basically control to the weakest cylinder. That is, if you have one injector that is dirty, the engine will lean out until that cylinder misfires, even though the other cylinders in the bank can be running pig rich. So, you want your injectors to be clean and even flowing to get max performance.
If you are feeling the engine giving a very occasional slight miss at light throttle cruise, or feeling sluggish on wide thottle openings you could have some dirty injectors. It is, in my experience better to use a fuel with a good detergent package all the time so as to avoid injector buildup, as opposed to trying to clean it out later. The idea with top tier gas is that you know you are getting a good detergent package with it and your car is gonna run right...
Different cars respond differently to fuel, but I do notice a real difference with my wifes car if she doesn't put good gas into it for a while, it is amazing how it perks up after a half a tank of fuel with higher detergent in it.

I have scratched Shell off my list after getting a REALLY bad tank of gas, and getting no support from the local franchise or corporate.
I prefer Chevron.

ANy time driving at 3000 rpms to red line will burn out and clean the injectors and decarb far better then any additive.
We tend to use the Hess stations more then anything. Fill up the fuel jugs for the cars and deseil in the truck at the same time.

Re:
Here in KC, and in at least this 200 mile radius area - Amoco has the highest octane gas available (other than race gas of course) at 92. ALL other stations/brands are 91.
That might be where some are coming from with Amoco on their list.
