Default 3rd to 4th Grind

Hey guys,
Went out today and the car started to grind when going from 3rd to
4th. It doesn't do it when going to fourth from any other gear so I suspect it is a synchro. I was just looking to see if anyone had any experience with this and if so maybe give me some pointers. Also wondering if any of your repaired it your self or how much the shop charged. Well thanks in advance for any help on this issue.

I've not had tranny issues but plenty have.

What are the specific circumstances when it grinds on the 3-4?

It sounds like a crushed syncro or a bent shift fork. I think the 3-4 shift fork on the t-56 is the weakest one of them all.

Had mine redone under warranty. Same issues as you're having. They replaced the bent shift fork (aluminum) with a steel one as well as the syncros.

Common problem. Many of the cars we have fixed here are for the 3rd, 4th and 5th synchros, blocker rings and the 3-4 shift fork. They have updated parts for all pieces . If the car is still under extended warranty it should be covered. It involves the trans getting fully disassembled and parts replaced. shop cost for parts and labor is probably in the $1,500-$2,000 range. The synchros are not cheap.

Well thanks guys for all of the help on this. I do not have an aftermarket shifter but I am planning on one now. I was just wondering what else should I do since I am here? I was thinking about having the hardened output shafts in and go ahead and do my leaky rear seal. Anyway I'll let you know when I get it all fixed. Thanks again for the help, God Bless

Richard, what dealership at you at? Are you the service Manager or Parts manager?

I really love your honesty when it comes to the car and would feel very at ease having it at your dealership.

I am a parts manager at Woodard Chevrolet Cadillac in Fairfield Ca. I do have some pull in Service as well and we currently discount parts and labor for CF member cars. We are more than willing to please even the most awnry customers and so far everyone from the forum has had a good story to tell. PM me if you would like more info or to discuss prices and service work and Thank You for the kind words. RICH
