Default Paint work going on record?

I've heard many times about any paint work, usually associated with body work after an accident, going on the car's record/carfax. While I understand that it's necessary for evidence of any accidents to go on record, is *all* paint work recorded?

The reason I ask is that I have a rather large "chip" that was caused by road debris that needs to be filled and repainted. Is this something that would go on the car's "file" or can this be avoided somehow? The "chip" is like an inch long by maybe 1/4 inch high.

Let me know what you think...

Possibly if you filed an insurance claim...and easily located if you have the dealer do it.

But...if you take it to a nice independent shop and pay out of pocket, it's not going to be in a "file". Unless it's a low mileage gem, most people understand having to repaint front bumpers/etc due to chips and debris. Oftentimes, even after repair, someone with attention to detail will still find evidence of the repair...there's no way around this unless you start over with a new bumper (or whatever piece it is) and have it painted off the car...and then you'd have to assume that they could get a perfect match for your color...
