If it needs an alignment, ALWAYS go with a 4-wheel alignment

Sounds like an uninformed opinion from another vette "expert". C5's do need alingments, 4 wheel variety is the only way to go!

If you think you need one get it done soon, these cars will eat tires if you are not careful. Also, if your car has been lowered you may have trouple fining a place where you can get your ride up on the alignment rack; you may have to shop arround a bit to find one.

Having new tires mounted, balanced and aligned today. With fixing the e-brake the total bill will be $900. (Tires were another $1100).

BTW - Bought the tires from Tire Rack - excellent quick service at a good price. to the vendor

$2,000 for mounting and balancing new tires, doing an alignment and fixing an ebrake problem???!!!! They skipped the vaseline and got you with sand on that one. Get your self a set of service manuals and learn to fix minor problems (ebrake, etc) yourself and find a better place for tires. If you don't, your car will more than eat you out of house and home.

Just my .02.

Even the Stealership will do a 4 wheel alignment on a C5 for under a $100. My local one is regularly $79 and does a special each spring for $65.

Depending on whether the ebrake issue was adjusting the tension in the cable ( backing up and pulling the handle 4-45 times) or dried caked grease on the level pawl ( couple hours max) or removing the rear wheels, calipers, rotors and adjusting the star wheel ( couple hours) or even replacing the parking brake lining ( $85 part)
There is no way this should be anywhere $900.
The mounting and balancing of tires at most shops is $20-25/tire... For $10 at Sam's they do both and include a lifetime road hazard warranty...
I'd take your bill to the dealership GM and demand a refund for at least half of the money....

Sounds like you got the Michelin Pilot Sports from Tire Rack - I just bought them last week as well.

My Install/Balancing and Alignment from a Tire Rack installer in my area was only $201 ($60 for the alignment, $140 for the install/balance, including a 15% discount for Tire Rack customers).

Both Tire Rack and my installer, Goodyear Auto Service in Nashua, were Great!

No offense to the mechanics at Sam’s club but…..

If I understand this right I can expect to get maximum performance and wear from my $1100 ZP, Y rated, uni-directional performance tires mounted with a basic spin balance - without damaging my expensive rims from a Sam’s club service tech for 40 bucks with the additional comfort of knowing that after 7500 miles if the tires are cupped/worn/shredded ol’ Uncle Sam Walton will replace those tires honoring their warranty? And for an additional roughly 100 bucks he has the equipment and knowledge to correctly align all four?

So what I’m hearing is the that Chevrolet trained techs who work on Corvette set ups, equipped and paid to address high speed road force balancing, Toe, Sum Toe, Steering Wheel Angle, Individual Caster, Cross Caster, Individual Camber, Cross Camber, Thrust Angle etc, is all crap.

And it is all crap because the 16 year old stoner with the baggy pants hanging down to his thighs who can’t wear a baseball cap right or speak in complete sentences that was kicked out of school for abusing classmates and teachers working at Sam’s will do the same work for $5.50 an hour in about an hour.

Wow. I am humbled. I do feel so violated. It is true you learn a lot here on this forum. I recognize I’m just a jerk with a Corvette and a checkbook, but now hanging around here and reading what the experts have to say I will save lots of money.

The $900 was the quote. Balanced and aligned when it was all said and done was a little over $500. Too much? Maybe. But you get what you pay for.

Buh – Bye………..
