I noticed that too with my 04. I had a similar incident, but was very lucky. I went to park on a slight hill. Left it in neutral put the e-brake up and shut the engine off. I noticed the car was starting to roll before I got out of it and that E-brake handle was way up. I mean the E-brake really has to be JACKED up if the car is on any incline, but I still don't trust the E-brake. I'm wondering if warrantee will adjust it, because I don't think it's right. I actually think I just pull the E-brake handle up for the helluva it. Anyways, I DO NOT exit the car unless it's in gear. If there's something in front of the car, I leave it in reverse, if there's something behind the car I leave it in 1'st. When I get back in the car, the very first thing I do before I do ANYTHING is make sure it is in neutral, then I release the E-brake and put my foot on the regular brake. I do this each and every time, it is a habit. The only place I park it in neutral is in my garage, in the event somebody in my house were to move the car out of the garage for some reason or something. I'm afraid that they wouldn't check to see if it's in neutral.

I'm looking for a FAQ on how to replace the skid plate assembly. Anybody have one?

its such a helpless feeling running after a driverless car!! i didn't pull my ebrake to that magical last click and ended up chasing after it till it hit the apartment building at the bottom of the hill. it hit the building right in the corner, damaging only the drain pipe, but was a 7000 dollar bill for the rearend of the car.

I had mine roll off my trailer when I was jacking up the tongue. I am sitting there spinning the handle to jack it up when the guy that works for me starts yelling! I look and see my car shoot off the trailer and roll into the back of the shop. Lucky for me the ramps were out and my brother was in the back of the shop to stop it before it hit anything. Atleast now I can look back and laugh. -Mat-

The ebrake on a disc brake car is actually a drum brake inside the disc brake rotor hub. Its basically the equivalent of a drum brake on a 4 wheeler.

Unless on flat ground don't leave your car in neutral with just the ebrake. Guaranteed disaster. Always in 1st gear or reverse. 2nd 3rd and so on the gearing is so high it will actually turn the motor over and roll anyway. 1st and reverse are the only 2 gears that are really hard to turn the motor over, giving enough resistance to keep the car where you left it.

I was going to try using the e-brake to throw the car into controlled skids, just hadn't gotten up the gumption to try it yet.. this discussion has me thinking otherwise though..

Having driven manual transmissions since my first car, I never even consider leaving the car parked and not in gear. I always dump it into first and yank the e-brake without thinking about it.

Mine is always left in gear, ebake OFF unless on a hill. Never had it "pop" out of gear, guess there is always a 1st time.

When I was in my 20's, a lineman for an electric utility company, my crew & I stopped for some ice creams at a favorite spot (with a sloping parking lot). Set the PB & left it in neutral.

We're all sitting at the counter with our backs to the street & the waitress says, "Hey, is that your truck moving?".

About 6 tons of big yellow truck slowly rolling backwards onto a busy street.

I have NEVER moved so fast in my life, caught it just in time, drove it back & put the chocks out (like I should have done) and walked back in to applause, nice save.

Still remember it to this day, & the ending could have been a lot worse.

Secure those Vettes guys.

Gotta pull it up until it's tight, or it will roll!

and, according to some other related posts I've read recently about C5 e-brakes, it might STILL roll even then!

The only time a manual trans car should be in neutral is when you're in the seat. DON'T trust the E-brake!
