My wife and I were in my mag red 02 coupe coming home from a movie and I glanced down at the speedometer and I was doing what looked like 99 mph. I freaked. I began hitting the brakes and was not slowing down much at all. I told my wife that we definitely had a problem. The HUD showed the same results. Finally, upon closer examination I realized that while cleaning the dash I must have hit the button to move to km. Has this ever happened to anyone else or am I the only idiot out there.
It usually only happens once, then you figure it out pretty quick. But it is a little shocking when you look down and see an unexpected number.
Last month while driving home from getting my car's yearly inspection I noticed my car was in the km mode. It got me thinking and just as I suspected, the inspection dude put the higher km number on my inspection report instead of miles. I guess he was flippin thru the DIC looking for the mileage and accidentally hit the km/miles mode. So now it looks like I drove 30K miles last year.....
I'm going to use that excuse when I get stopped. Sorry Officer but you must have accidentally hit your KM button. What do you mean you don't have a KM button????

guess what though? since you have the wrong odometer miles listed in a state inspection a carfax report will pop it up as possible odometer fraud since it will appear to have been rolled back...not sure what to suggest, at least get it documented since everyone wants to swear by a carfax report nowadays.

That was the first thing I was thinking - you may want to go back and see if they will correct it. You don't want the higher mileage being part of your official mileage records.
Never happened to me! I could imagine the surprise to realize your going much faster than what you actually are. Although, when driving my car, it never really feels that I'm going all that fast.
Soon after I got my car I took my younger son and later my younger daughter for a ride. They both wanted me to "go really, really fast... way over 100 mph" (damn 200 mph speedometer!), but I really didn't want to drive like that with them in the car.
I was on I-80 and there weren't many cars on the road. Next thing you know, I slowed it way down and hit the E/M ("Extra Motor" go faster button) and punched it hard...... The speedo quickly jumped to 100 and they were happy.
I was happy too because during the second ride, I was really doing only 70 mph (she thought I was doing 100) as I went past a trooper (5 miles above the speed limit) and smiled. She asked me why the trooper didn't try to stop us for speeding....... I told her, he knew even he couldn't catch a Corvette.
