This C5 Stinks (for real)
Sorry
I looked at a friends C5 today. He has an 02 cpe with low miles (less than 20k)and it spend most of its time in the garage. The problem is that he has a moldy/ stinky smell that is coming from his vents.
I told hem it smelled like it could be a water leak and he said that the car has never leaked. His udders are clean and the AC drips like normal.
Does anyone know of a way to get rid of the smell? Is there a coil cleaner that can be sprayed in there or something? It smells bad enough that I would not ride in the car for a long trip.
Just think of a beautiful woman that just ate a turd sammich. (car vs. smell)
Other than just "airing it out", maybe I'd try a weak water/bleach solution in a spray bottle. Mist a little of it into the air inlets with the a/c running. Do it several times over a week's time or so. The bleach might kill off any mold fungus that's causing the stank.

Going for a ride in his Vette is like that woman (you know with the sammich)breathing in you face
I am not sure if it is coming JUST from the vents I think he has something on his coil or somwhere close. I find it hard to think that all of his vents smell the same.
Try using Fabrese,, After I took my car out from storage it had a smell I sprayed the interior a few times and sprayed into the vents as well. Smell is all gone. When I get a chance I would like to take out the seats and fully shampoo the carpets and mats this will freshen it up,, Good luck with it. Also if you keep it in the garage,, try keeping the car windows opened
I have read that spraying Lysol into the exterior hood vents with the system running (so it circulates) kills the mold and removes the smell, but have not had the need to try it for myself.
Try this website, they have commercial sprays designed specifically to solve this problem: http://www.airsept.com/
Take it to a dealer or car shop, most have a machine that they place in the car with the A/C or heater on to circulate it. The machine is some type of ozone or chlorination machine, they use it to remove bad smells from used cars like smoke or mold. It works pretty well.

Good luck.
I tried this on a '95 Grand Prix after it had sat for a couple of weeks in a garage.
The mold odor NEVER went away.
If you have any success please post what the trick was.
In the meantime, I'll remember the ozone for the next time.
I thought i remember going to a local chevy stealership and they had a can of crap that you sprayed in the vents or hooked up to the vents somehow...and it was supposed to get rid of and kill the bacteria. Run up to your local stealer and see what they say. As i recall it was 10 bucks or something like that....

There is a spray (something) that you can sprap into your exterior intake vents with the a/c running and the blower on high. We got it from the dealer and it seemed to work if used periodically. Not home now so can't give you a name. You might try an AutoZone or Advance, etc.

The only thing I would add is to turn the AC on high at full fan speed when you spray the Lysol in at the base of the windshield. This will suck the Lysol right into your system vents. If this method does not work, take it to your local shop and ask them about a product called Frigifresh. I think it is made by BG products. This is a foam that can be sprayed in to the vent system to kill bacteria. They also have a more comprehensive treatment where they screw a small adaptor into your platic ducting under the dash and spray in this foam to kill bacteria and freshen the system. Good luck with it.

I dont know how to remove the moldy stink but I do know how to prevent it. It is most likely caused by the AC. If you are driving with the AC on... about 1/2 mile from your destination turn off the AC and leave your fan on. This prevents any condensation left behind by the AC sitting in your vents/ducts from turning into that stink. This works for me. I have NO stink in my C5.

I agree with the Lysol Spray into the the exterior air intakes. the key is to kill the source of the smell, not to mask it with a room deodorant inside the car.

Also, turn the air control to allow external air in. Always using the interior recirculate setting allows the moisture to remain in the ducts and eventually that moldy smell.
