Default What Would You REALLY Do If...

... you actually came upon someone doing damage to your Corvette in some parking lot you thought was "safe" to park in?

I know what most of us have said we'd do...but be real here. Would you really beat the **** out of them as many have said, or worse, use deadly force?

Honest answers here folks.

Since I'm non-combative, I'd yell at them to stop and look for witnesses for future legal remedies. I'd grab my cell and dial 911. If the perps ran to a vehicle to escape I'd write down a discription and a plate # for the LEOs. I would follow at a safe distance to identiufy the direction they would go whether they left by vehicle of foot. I'd try to avoid a physical confrontation. A friend of mine was jumped by a madman with a 10" butcher knife about 8 months ago. He is still recovering. Our society is too crazy to put yourself in a dangerous position these days.

What would you do?

I would be very but would never hurt anyone. I wouldn't let them run from me though, if possible and safe, I'd follow or chase them down (on foot only, not in a car) to be sure the cops get them too. I hate vandals so much.

If it were my vette and I caught someone in the act of vandalizing it? I would physically detain them until the law arrived, if they were a "little" injured in the process,oh well! Actually who knows what any of use would do. I guess it depends on many factors. Are you alone, is he alone, are they kids or adults? I guess you would have to take all these thing in account, BEFORE you started breaking his bones....

well I do not want to go to jail . these day you would get sued or put in jail for protecting your car very unfair but that's the the law . also people will shoot you for a $ 1.00 so . the hard part would be trying to control myself .

Default perps

Hard to tell what I would do. I do know the perp would not get away. Citizens arrest allows you to use what force is necessay to detain the perp. Also they just changed the law here in Az. placing the burden of proof on the DA instead of the citizen in cases of defending yourself.
I believe one of the reasons these people keep doing these things is most people won't do what is necessary to stop them.

Yell at them and call the cops, if thier bigger them me..Confront them if its a kid or a defeatable adult.

I would be very hesitant to bring my glock with me in this case, cause they say dont bring it unless you plan and are willing to use it.. So you shoot the guy cause he has a knife and tries to stab you.

Now the cops say why did you bring a gun out of your house, you must have had the intent to harm someone..Now your going to jail for murder...

Just not worth getting caught up in the law for a car that they made 10 of thousands of....or getting killed yourself......

I think the operative worh here is "defending" yourself. I think you cak tackle a fleeing felon, but shooting one who is running away will land you in hot water in all 50 states.

I wouldn't do a thing, especially in Tacoma (assuming you are on the east side or near the mall). Can't trust the thugs around here. My life is more important than my Z. Whatever damage happened to the car can be repaired.

Hard to answer, but knowing my temper, I would probably end up arrested for kicking the shi% out of them.

I am just sick and tired of calling the law and having them tell me that I need to just call the insurance company (I know this already!) and that the chances of catching them is slim. Or having them picked up and taken to court and find that they have no insurance anyways and I am going to end up calling the insurance company and get screwed again.

I would just feel better getting my anger out by getting in a few knock out punches.

(Go ahead folks tell me that I am wrong, I don't CARE!)

It had nothing to do with what car they are vandelizing, just the fact that some slug is trying to screw over someone else property that they worked hard to get and the law really could care less these days.

If I thought I could recoupe damages, I MIGHT use my head. Knee jerk reaction , which would no doubt prevail, would be to kick the living **** out of the punk. This is scarey ... I ain't the kid I used to be. Hope I never have to choose.

A DEAD MAN TELLS NO TELLS

Be for real , if they just shattered your window and ripped out your stereo ,m with the wires hanging, how long do you think it will be b4 they are back out after the cops or if the cops arrest them? An hour maybe two. I know what I would do. I am sick and tired of people strealing or vandelizing things that I have worked hard to buy.

Default Hmmmm.... Lemme see.....

Few things I'd consider:

1. I legally carry. +
2. In CA., if vandalism damage is more than $400, it's a felony. + (I'm not a body shop guy, so I CAN assume it's expensive-whatever it is)
3. Do I know the person is NOT carrying a weapon? -
4. For most in-progress crimes, there are more criminals involved than the one you see. -
5. Am I alone or with someone? (+ if I'm alone, - if I'm not)
6. Calling 911 from a cell goes to Highway Patrol -
7. If they decided to make a run for it... what to do then? Chase or just get a good description? Chase - maybe? They could lead you right to their buddy "waiting the in bushes".
8. Time of day +/-
9. Familiar with the area? +/-

All odds are, I'll prone the person out at gun point (If I'm sure their buddy isn't sitting in a car near by with a gun... or even just ready to run me over), find a means to restrain (a belt, shoe laces, or nylon zip ties work).

Shooting someone over a property crime is teeter tooter in my opinion, unless you can articulate a threat to your life... but the DA can turn on you and look at you as a vigalante if you just "caught them in the act" and decided to pop a cap in their a$$... Not to mention the civil suit if the guy survives... I've seen it happen.

(For anyone else who might be carrying) If/when a cop gets there and you're holding the gun to the crook - be prepared to have a gun pointed at you... they don't know who you are or what's REALLy going on.

Be safe out there-

Dave Q.

Would definitely be but if I was in the right frame of mind I'd probably just call the cops.

The reality is - would you REALLY kill someone for ripping out your stereo? C'mon that's and you know it. Would you be justified in beating the crap out of the perp - probably not, but you would feel better no doubt. I would. I am not a pacifist - but this talk of killing someone is silly.

Perp: Laying DOA with gunshots

Owner : "He was stealing my stereo"

Officer : "Did he threaten you in anyway?"

Owner : "No."

Officer : "Are you sure about that?"

Owner : "Yeah. I shot him the back 3 times. He didn't get a chance to threaten me."

Officer : "You sure he didn't say anything like... I"m gonna kill you with this screwdriver in my hand!"

Owner : "Nope. My wife video taped the whole thing!"

Officer <Looking down, shaking his head> :"Alrigh then."

Perp <muffled voice> : I'm not dead.

Officer : "Okay Mr.Smith. The Detectives will want to talk to you now"
