I just read another flying top story and thought the remedy I have come up with may be helpful for someone. I have a plastic "ID" type card holder (like a fishing license holder) attached to the rear latch. when the top is not latched, the card, which says "latch top" hangs down in clear view(shows in the rearview mirror also). when I latch the top, I can tuck the card up under the latch handle where it is out of view. It has worked for me so far.

If it helps keep the top from flying off, sounds like a good thing. I always latch mine when I put it back on - just a habit so things like joining the flying roof club don't happen.
There's this thing called life, and sometimes you're so involved in it and the things surrounding you to forget to do the laundry, pay a bill,even forget the date(never the year though ) or latch the top on your vette! We're only human.....this is a good cheap DIY idea! Shall I dare call it a MOD?!

There are those who have done it and those who will. I've even joined the Convertible FRC:o Nice sail
Here's another memory jogger:
There was also a mod done recently which a vendor was selling. It was a simple lanyard that hooked over the handle when it was unlatched and dropped into view in the center of the windscreen. Cheap and simple. cant find the thread unfortunately.

To be honest, I don't see how it should happen in the first place. When the top isn't latched, the front latch handles hang down. Should be easy to spot.

No hanging front handles for me either. The handles rotate horizontal for me. Now the rear latch hangs down.
Joking aside this is a well known phenomena in aviation circles.
The way your brain works is that you set up a pattern in your mind to carry out routine tasks. Think how you brush your teeth or get dry after showering. its always the same routine. Its called a Motor Neurone Pattern by the shrinks.
The problem is when someone distracts you mid way through the routine, youre likely to make a mistake. You almost always have to start over or think harder about finishing the task. In a jet, the air traffic controllers are taught to stay quiet during the period on finals when pilots are doing landing checks.
So, if you get distracted as you're latching the top it may get left undone.
many times - simplicity ends up being the best design.
If a recent engineering grad tried to design something to remind C5 owners that their top wasn't latched... it would have:
* a programmable micro-controller
* a "reset switch" incase the micro locks up
* a USB port to upload new updated BIOS instruction sets
* a 105 page operators manual
* an "expansion port" for further expansion (where nothing will ever be offered that actually uses the expansion port)
* sell for $249.

I too never thought it would happen to me. After 4 years and 9 months of Corvette ownership, it did. :o
Good suggestion. I have a laminating machine at work and will make something up.

Those were sold by a supporting vendor, http://www.ufoparts.com
I saw the ad here and went to their web site, but it is not working.
