Default Bad fit around the console - Mod Needed

One thing that drives me crazy is the poor fit around the front section of the console just above the radio mounting. If I look at mine from the passenger side there's a gaping hole. I've tried reseating the trim and it improves things but theres still a gap.

It strikes me that a trim piece that fits in between the main dash and the console would tidy it up a lot. I have a leather insert around the AH panel and that works well.

Has anyone done a mod like this? If not there must be some ideas among the collective brain power on the Forum

Any ideas?

Right with ya - this has always bugged me. Any venodors have an insert? Any home modifications?

There's a prong that's supposed to fit into the dash. Often it gets missed, and there's a HUGE gap there. Make sure the consol mounts into the dash on that corner.

Thanks, Chris. When I installed my new shifter, I tucked that corner back up an and wedged it tight with some packing material when I tightened everything back down. Didn't last long. Just seems like really poor GM construction. You can literally see the metal of the radio from my passenger seat.

It's not that Chris. I've had the console out a few times and managed to bend that prong on one occasion. Even with it snugged tight there's still a huge gap.

Repetitive thread. Another one of those "it doesn't fit right" posts. Some do, some dont.

As one person reminded us....keep in mind...at the end of the day, it's just another GM / Chevy product.

It may be repetetive but I've still not seen a fix and it drives me nuts

Somehow just because GM didn't get the fit right doesn't stop me wanting to fix it.

Its like CLB, I have an A4 so I'm unaffected but I can still feel the pain

I have never sat in the passenger seat except to clean that side of the car windows i will have to look and see if my car has a gap like that also.Well i just went down and sat in the passenger seat and i see what you mean i can see some red wire i guess from the radio but if i take and push in on that side the small gap goes away but who the heck can sit all day and hold that section together so you cant see the wire. You would probably need the same color material as the dashboard to fit into that space so you cant see an opening their but i think that would look funny.I guess not seating in the passenger seat would help this way you would not see the gap.I have had my car for thee years and never noticed it.It's a small area on my car but maybe some of you other guys have a bigger gap near your radio then i do.

My fit was perfect until I installed the AVIC N2 with the default surround. It is too deep (even after cutting the aluminum backtab) and pushed the OEM dash forward.

Moving to the new surround and letting the N2 sit a tiny bit forward fixed it for me. I have forgotten the name of the surround now.

This one pushed the OEM dash out

This one fixed the problem

Went back to the car and looked at the small gap and wondered if somewhere they make a two way tape in black this if was put on the back piece of the consol i think it would hold the two pieces together tighter when it was put back together.Do you understand what i mean or would this not work

Like I said, some fit nice, some don't. When you find a 'fix' it would make a nice "sticky", or add into database of quirks.

Luckily mine fits on my 2000 coupe, with just the smallest of a gap on the bezel at the top right corner, but not enough so that I can see what's behind it. My 99 coupe didn't fit all that well.

That's the same place i have a very small opening in the top right hand corner but like i said before if i push it against the back it closes if i let go it has the opening again i guess you must think two way black tape wont work huh?

Here's one that doesn't fit well at all. A 2004 Stock to the bone, ZO6 with only 8000 miles on it. No amount of mashing, pushing, take apart, put back on has been able to 'fix' it.

Looks EXACTLY like mine. Or should I say 'equally as bad' Just shouldn't happen in a car like this

As I've posted before, mine was that way the day I picked it up new. I didn't want some monkey screwing it up, so I removed the surround to see what was up. There are two serrated prongs that are supposed to grip the dash near the radio. I put two one inch squares of 1/8 inch thick rubber between the prongs and dash. The fit has now been tight for over two years and 25,000 miles.

Maybe thats the way to do it. Just tighten up the fit on the prong

Worth a try, thanks

I had this problem with mine , loosened up the Torx screws behind the ashtray on the bottom , and more importantly the one behind the indoor air sensor cover , realigned the piece , the tightened the screws back up .
helped some .
Also loosening the 2 10mm (I think) bolts under the ride control cover , pushing the trim piece forward , then tightening the bolts again while pushing , has helped as well .
good luck

I see you have a narrow piece of a black product which i have seen before but cannot remember where i have seen that product that fits into the small gap that is around the consol on the side to fill the opening.I know, its sort of like the stuff you use when you redo screens the rubber stuff that holds the screens in the frame.Thats what that looks like only in black not in the gray like i have seen.

I had a modding day during which I installed the CLB as well as new shift ****, shift boot, parking brake handle and boot from Vette Essentials.

Before the install, my surround also fit poorly. It was removed during the install of the previously-mentioned items. I was able to improve it a lot during the re-install. It's worth a try!

I've already had my console in and out a few times.

From what EG said, I suspect it may be that the electronic garbage behind my AVIC is causing the console to sit out a little. Maybe as madeouttaglass says I can tighten up the fit with some filler material. Its worth a try.
