Peel up the plastic shift pattern insert, use long nose pliers to grip the demon key and pull straight up. It will come out and you will be able to unscrew the ****.

Sometimes it helps to use a pair of vice grips. Just clamp them on the top of the key in the middle of the shift **** and then gently tap up on the side of the vice grips until the key pops out. Then unscrew the ****.

This is what I did. A few taps with a hammer and it came right out.

This worked for me also although bits and pieces of the key kept breaking off but it came out just when there was very little of the lip left. I did not put the key back in.
A monkey could have designed a better positive retainer for that ****- imagine my surprise when I gave the vicegrips a good yank and head of the key BROKE OFF No, the vicegrips didn't slip at all, the head just came clean off of the key body, which was still imbedded in the shifter.
I was imediately very happy that I bought the hurst ball **** (which is great, btw!) with my hurst shifter.
