So my radar detector suction cups let loose tonight, and I pushed a little too hard and the windshield cracked and spiderwebbed in three places. Can a regular auto glass shop do this, or should I hit the stealership?
huhh?!!!! windshield cracked just from pushing your radar detector?!!!
jeeze! sure it wasn't cracked before?
look in the yellow pages under "auto glass"....call around for prices...body shop...or those mobile glass places usually handle that...make sure they know it's for a zo6!
My windshield is a piece of crap too. In my first week of owning it I already had two rock chips and now I have mysterious scratches all over it. The only thing I can think of that caused it is either washing it with one of the squeegies from a gas station or from blowing sand when I was at the beach. Either way, the Z windshield is crap.

Safelite just put a new one in for me with no problems...they ordered the windshield through the dealership and came out to my house.
Just a hard-earned word of advice. I had windshield problems with a Honda s2000, which attracted rocks like dogs do fleas. I had horrible experiences with Safelite or whatever they're called (the ones who do GEICOs work unless you ask otherwise). I now avoid all such "franchise" come-to-you operations. Do yourself a favor and find a good local glass shop that'll do the job at their shop and stand behind their work. Local independent outfits have reputations to protect, and that's a good thing.

How can you possibly "blame" the windshield & call it a piece of crap? You just listed all the outside forces that MADE it a piece of crap!! Its thinner glass than regular C5 windshields for a weight saving factor.

I just used too much force when I should finessed it.
I made the mistake of taking my car to a big company, and they screwed everything up. Stay away from glass pro, they broke all of my trim and tried to hide it from me. All of the trim looked like it was reinstalled by a 4 year old, and they tried to glue it up with superglue witch got on my roof and will not come off. I am currently disputing this job with my credit card company
Yikes! I'm surprised to hear all the windshield comments. Has anyone <ulp> downgraded to a standard C5 windshield for a sturdier setup, or do the windshield shops even distinguish between a C5 and C5 Z06 windshield?

The Z06 windshield weighs less than a vert or coupe windshield. Its shaded for the hud, and so thin that the antenna could not be put in the windshield. But its designed that way, if you change to a coupe/vert windshield you defeat the purpose of buying a Z06 by adding un-wanted weight to the car. I made sure they quoted me on a Z06 windshield, twice.
The last time I saw the windshield part numbers listed the Z06 and Vert windshields are the same part number. Go to a glass shop. If you go to the dealer they will sublet the job to a local glass shop. Why pay profit to two company's when you can just pay one profit to one. Make sure they know what glass you are looking for and they will get it. By the way your comprehensive insurance should cover the cost of the repair.

It's hard for me to believe that "Joey's glass shop" would differentiate between a C5 and C5 Z06 windshield, although I have no doubt that GM does (and did) when designing the car. What is the weight difference of the windshields anyway?

I may need to replace my windshield soon do to chips and a very small crack that will probably get bigger. Are all non Z windshields with antennas? I want the real Z windshield and want to have a simple way to tell them apart once it is on the car if someone tries to pull a fast one.
I had Acme Glass in Plymouth Ma. do mine. The owner drives a 408ci C5 hehe. The dealer should be able to recommend whoever does their glass, especially on Vettes. I watched the installation from start to finish. I would say it is best to have someone that has replaced more than one Vette windshield for the best results. The weatherstripping preperation at each door is probably the most critical step of the replacement.
They said that the ZO6 windshield was $1,050.00 and was shipped directly from Michigan.

From the sticky above....5.7 pounds lightier than the coupe windshield

Chuck,
The Coupe is the only C5 with the antenna in the windshield and the rear glass. The vert and FRC cars have regular antennas. I imagine the Z windshield is probably cheaper since it doesn't have the antenna. What you want is a windshield without an antenna that is HUD compatible.

The wording on my Z's windshield says 4.6MM, shaded for HUD. It also has a circle with the letter E and the numeral6 inside the circle, as well as the following-43R008008
