Reason: spelling and model
If you're concerned about the steering wheel NOT locking when the key is out, why in the world did you get the recall fix done???? Your car has been modified so you don't get the dreaded steering wheel lock up. If I were you, I'd be thankful you got it done.
Mine was fixed 3-4 years ago and absolutely no problems whatsoever. I'm certainly glad I had the steering wheel lock eliminated. Good luck...

I've got the column lock bypass installed so mine doesn't lock either. I just figure it is better that way rather than being in the middle of nowhere and having the car's steering column lock up and leave me stranded.
I had my recall done last Nov. 05. on my 97, well 2 weeks ago I got the PULL KEY WAIT 10 SEC'S. After trying to move the car the fuel shut off. The same day I called a guy from the area Corvette Club who installs the CLB and he made a house call to me and in 30 min. no more worries. Moral of the story, just beacuse the dealer recall was done, don't count on it.
how can you tell if your used vette has had the recall for steering column lock problems? any tell tale signs? thanks...........
Best way to find out if your car had any recalls done is to run your VIN through GM VIS. Stop at a dealer and have the service manager run the number. Also, but less reliable, dealers are supposed to put a white service campaign sticker to show "4006 Campaign" after the steering column recall is done. The sticker is mounted on the driver side wheel fender in the engine compartment.

I have never heard of it actually locking, just shutting fuel to the motor, mine never had a problem but I had the recall done then I had problems. They take the lock out of all of them. Just makes your 6 speed car easier to steat

You'll find that the column locking up is one of the most serious problems that affects all the MN6s and some A4s. By far the biggest problem reported here is the dreaded column lock producing a stranded car. GM have failed to come up with a decent fix to the problem and the aftermarket Column Lock Bypass (CLB) seems to be the most reliable solution.
Mines a post 2000 A4 so I dont have a lock, thank goodness. Keep your eyes out and you'll see just how much of a problem it is. In the meantime, enjoy the fact that your steering is unlocked
As far as theft is concerned, the stock security system is pretty good and you could always go for an aftermarket extra. My experience with car thieves is that the column lock doesn't even slow their stride, just makes a bigger mess of the car.
Mine locked up a few years ago (before the recall). I managed to get it unlocked and took it to the dealer. Of course the idiots said there was nothing wrong with the car (I'll skip all the details).
Never had a problem since but saved all the recall notices sent by GM. I figured I'll take my chances rather than letting the idiots take the car apart to remove the lock and creating dash board rattles.
Well last weekend it locked. I managed to get it unlocked but didn't drive it. Yesterday it locked again. Think I'll finally get the recall done.
Couple questions if anyone knows. Do they remove the lock or just pull the electrical connector. When they reflash the computer do they only modify the code relating to the column lock or is the whole computer set to the latest version? If its the latter, is there anything undesirable in the new code?
Thanks
Oh ya, the column lock would never have stopped a pro from stealing your car (or even an amateur with a tow truck).
I got the dreaded "remove key - 10 minute" warning last night while trying to move my '01 Z06 (14k miles) into the garage. I tried to move it the 20 feet into the garage but the column locked and the engine was suddenly killed. Curiously I could restart the car - and did several times. But the column wouldn't unlock.
I called the dealer first thing this morning and he informed that the column fix was done a year ago while the car was in for servicing. The flatbed was on it's way so I went to clean out the vette. For grins I started it ... and everything was normal - no lock, no codes - so I cancelled the tow, of course.
I've seen some cars clear the column lock issue leaving it to set over night.
Since the issue has cleared for the time being I would entertain the idea of taking it back to the dealer for the latest fix. It has been known to fail quite often and is a waste of time. Get the CLB installed ASAP.

If you took the time to read all the threads regarding this issue and the recall "fix", you would not take your car to the dealer. Just get the CLB!

Anybody else seen this happen?
I would order a CLB - if I recall Chevy has tried 2 or 3 different times to get the recall right for 6 speeds. If you had one of the earlier versions done it may not protect you.
Oops, yup my bad. I've been away from the forum for some time. I jumped into this thread as the result of a google search. Since this mornings post I've read every post in the column lock sticky thread. I'm going to build my own CLB and not go anywhere near the dealership!
