Default column lock

I have recently purchased a 2003 AE convertable, it is a fantastic machine, nothing wrong with it, but checking through the threads I notice a lot of mention on column lock.Could that also happen on this model ? or had it been rectifid by then. Being the 2nd owner I do not know if there were any recalls on the vehicle or not. Any info would be appreciated.

If it's an auto, there is no column lock. If it's a manual, there is a column lock an a recall notice was sent out. Have your Chevy dealer run the VIN to see if the recall has been done on the car(there should be a recall sticker under the hood, if the recall was done, but some dealers don't put the sticker on).

I would seriously reconsider having the recall done. Many people who had no problems before the recall experience error messages afterwards. The dealer may also reprogram your computer to cut the fuel if it perceives a problem (real or not) with the steering lock. This was done on the earlier recall but some techs do it with the new one also which is wrong. It's really a crapshoot with some dealers.

I would just install the CLB if I were you and not do the recall.

I agree with your warning to reconsider having GM perform the recall. But I need to correct your statement about the fuel cutoff.

The fuel cutoff has always been part of the CL design - if the BCM detects a locking state mismatch, it will instruct the PCM to cut fuel if the car is accelerated above 2MPH. One of the earlier recalls for the MN6 modified the fuel cutoff programming due to a potential condition that would allow the car to accelerate with the column locked. That recall also spliced a relay into the BCM wiring harness to accomodate the programming change. The recall is no longer valid since GM finally decided to disable the CL on MN6s just like they did on A4s. No current recall should reprogram anything (except for export C5s).

But even this latest recall (4006C) causes more problems than it solves as there have been many posts about cars being disabled by the fuel cutoff because the BCM is sent an incorrect state.

Your options are:
  • If you have an A4 - Nothing is needed. There is no CL in your car since A4s built in 2001+ had the lock removed.
  • If the older recalls have been done and the CL still locks when you pull the key out, you should have GM perform the latest recall which disables the CL all together and installs a Harness K relay to provide the BCM with the correct states. The older recall needs to be reversed in this process by removing the relay that was spliced into the BCM wiring and reflash the car back to original. Then, you should replace the Harness K with the CLB. The GM Harness K solution is faulty and is known to report incorrect states to the BCM, resulting in fuel cutoff. The CLB will keep the BCM happy.
  • If you haven't had any recalls, then the best solution is just install the CLB.

Why get the recall, just install the CLB.

If you have the manual tranny, install the column lock bypass. You won't have to worry about it locking with that installed.

Hi RichierichZ06.
Thanks for looking that up for me, not good on computors yet, still flailing about.Looks like the vette is o.k., at least he didn't appear to have problems with it. I bought the extended warranty so am not worried much, but would not want to be stuck on the road waiting for a tow truck. Guess I better go to the dealer and ask him to check it out for me. JoesC5 in an earlier reply stated that if it was an automatic ( which it is ) then it does not have a column lock???????

Dude...you have a 2003 Auto which means you have no column lock. All you had to do is turn the wheel with the ignition off to see if it was locked. If it is then you really have a problem...

That is because you have a 98 auto.

Hello WWK888,
yOU are right, I just went out to try the steering and no column lock,
went through the owners manual again and found it on pg.3-55,
Service column lock ( Manual transmission only ) sorry for the run around, but I had to check it out. I've read that manual half a dozen times, but I didn't pick up on it.
