Default OBDII connection

My wife has a 2002 Grand Prix GTP and recently the ABS light comes on intermittently and she says the brake pedal will "kick up" with the ABS engaging. My question is, does this 2002 have an onboard system that when you jump two terminals in the OBDII connector, it will flash the check engine light a number of times to represent a code? I know the older GMs used to do it. The newer ones, I'm not sure of and the connector pins are in different locations now. If it is possible, does anyone know which pins to jump? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As far as I know, you need an OBD II computer of some kind to do that. If you're having issues with the ABS light...make sure your alternator isn't going bad. That's a warning sign...ABS light, then battery light.

BTW...This thread will probably be moved to the "Other Cars" section since it has nothing to do with a C5.

Default C5 OBD II Code Reader

I purchased one of these last year to be able to read codes on OBD II compliant vehicles including my C5.

I think they can now be purchased for under $150. It is an incredibly handy tool and can be used on any 1996 and newer OBD II equipped vehicle. It is slightly easier to use than the DIC on the C5, but in my opinion is not as informative. It appears to only read current codes, but does not display historical codes. It will indicate that there might be H codes, and indicate the system at fault, but will not display them. On the C5 I use the DIC when in doubt. It will also let you clear codes and turn off the CEL.

On the other hand, I can use it on any other OBD II compliant vehicle and I find it very useful. EQUUS has a web site that will link you to the codes for just about any other vehicle you might want and will give you information on codes displayed. http://www.iequus.com/support/obd2_definitions.php

One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a code reader is that the OBD II protocol is changing (some 05 vehicles already have) and not all code readers can read it. Keep this in mind when picking a code reader so that it doesn't become obsolete if you purchase a new vehicle. All code readers should tell you if they are C.A.N. (Controller Area Network), capable.

I chose the EQUUS because of their reputation with diagnostic equipment, but there are others that offer them as well.

Good luck... GUSTO
