I have 2000 C5 coupe auto with a strange air conditioner problem. The air conditioner stops sending cold air at 1000 rpm or less. The compressor seems to be engaged, but warm air at 1000 rpm or less ModificationsJett hot headers,Callaway Honker sytem for exhaust, new cam 224/224/50 581 lift Ls Hyer tech edit,LT29(LS6) heads. Dyno at 430 hp at the crank and 360 at rear end. When the headers were installed the rubber line for the freon was toasted. The line was replaced with a metal line. The a/c compressor is also new. Any ideas,it sucks in hot weather traffic jams.
Sounds like it could be low on refrigerant (Freon - R-134a) or something is blocking the condensor (located in front of the radiator). Looks underneath the bumper and up at the condensor and see if there is any trash covering the condensor.
Could also be when the compressor was replaced, they did not evacuate the system to get all the air out prior to putting the freon in. Any good A/C shop can put a set of gauges on it and let you know how if it needs freon or if there is any air in the system.

Sounds like low freon or they did not put vac in the system before filling it etc.
thats your LPCO kicking on and off. (low pressure cut out) At low RPMs the pressure inside your system is droping below the min pressure required to keep your clutch engaged.
Very simple to fix...like the above posters said. Just add a little R135-A from autozone and your good to go.
As far as the AC kicking off above 1700 RPMs I'm not really sure. I know its susposed to do that at WOT. Maybe the switch that kickes the AC off at WOT is out of adjustment? Just throughing out ideas.
Kicking off at higher RPMs but cooling at idle could mean that the system is either overcharged and the compressor is shutting off due to high pressure (designed this way to prevent destroying the compressor) or perhaps you too may have some trash on the condensor. With trash on the condensor, the pressures go up and could be causing the system to disengage the compressor clutch.
Also check for trash in the space between the radiator and condensor. Seems to be a collection spot for debris.
