Default Oil

My son just bought a VW GTI Turbo. He plans on changing the oil this week. He was going to use Mobil 1 0w30 15,000 oil.
I use Mobil 10w30 in my Corvette and I feel for the temps here it works fine. I suggested he might want to use the same. He wondered if the Turbo would be better off with the lighter cold weight oil.
I know there have been many threads on this. I wonder if the Turbo issue is relevant ???
Anybody on the Forum have a Turbo car as well as the Vette? Any experience with this?

What does the owners manual say in terms of recommended viscosity? That would be a good place to start. Nothing wrong with the Mobil 1 choice.

Default oil

the turbo has oil pushed through it, by the engines oil pump, useing the oil as a coolant, and as a lubricant, that thin oil is ok, if the temp outside is in the teens, to 20's, some people like that thin oil, that is what most car makers recomend, for max. fuel efficency, if your going to drive your car in cold weather all the time 0-30 is fine, so far this summer I haven't seen a 20 yet, use a little heavyer oil, and save that light oil for the winter, Im sure your going to change the oil again this year right, go with the 10-30, your main bearings, rod bearings, and your turbo, will like it better. my $0.02

Contrary to popular belief, 10W-30 does NOT protect an engine better than 0W or 5W-30 oil. In fact, more start up wear will occur if using 10W-30, even at 70 degrees F. Check his owner's manual for the best viscosity oil.

I have a '93 Eagle Talon AWD Turbo. My C5 runs 10 W 30 and the Talon runs 20 W 50. The reasoning behind all this is that all turbos run considerably HOTTER and therefore need the extra weight in order to keep from breaking down under so much heat. My Talon is somewhat modified and runs in the low thirteens. I have had no problems plus am running a huge front mount intercooler. Good Luck!!

According to GTI owners, the viscosity recommended in the GTI handbook is either 5W-30 or 5W-40 (synthetic oils). I think it would be safe to say that 0W-30 or 0W-40 is also okay, but again, you should never use higher (on the cold side of viscosity rating) viscosity oils at startup temps (such as 10W-XX or 15W-XX) oils, as the engine's oil lubrication holes are designed for oils that are thin enough to pass through quickly enough to protect against startup wear.
