Default HUD Issue?

For the past few weeks I have been noticing my HUD display will get dim than bright as I drive along. This only happens during daylight driving, everything works fine at night.

I looked up how it operates in the service Manuel and it is supposed to have a light sensor. Does anyone know if this is part of the HUD unit? I know about the one on the dash above the DIC buttons and it only dims the dash lighting. The other one on the dash top is for the auto lights on, both of these work fine and have no effect on the HUD.

I have tired using a very bright flashlight around the HUD unit to see if it would have any effect on the brightness but it does not, only happen while driving. I also tried varying RPM’s no effect.

Thanks Steve

Two things will cause this problem.

1. Polarized sun glasses and

2. The sun light hitting your windshield at various angles

As far as I know, there is no auto dimming feature on the HUD. But, maybe I'm wrong?????? If I am, hopefully someone else will chime in......Good luck....

No sun glasses here, and by dimming I mean it gets very dim as if you dimmed it to its lowest setting than will slowly get bright again. Does this every few miles.

The amount of light in the area of the screen will cause this as well.

My Bonneville w/ HUD does this sometimes as the headlights go on/off automatically. There are times when it can;t figure out if it On or Off (dusk/dawn/real cloudy days) and the light go On/Off/On.... The HUD dims w/ the lights on, bright when theie off.

sounds like the HUD harness wire is loose and intermittingly losing full contact !

I've noticed that the hud on my '01 vert is brighter than the one on my '04 coupe, about 25% brighter. Took it to the dealer and they claim it's OK. I just can't understand why the '01 has a brighter display.

I have trouble seeing mine on a bright day with light colored concrete roads. Blacktops offer more contrast.

At night, I have to manually dim it as it is to bright.......

Thanks for the replys

At this point I guess I'll just wait and see if it gets worse or goes out completely..was thinking if I could find where the light sensor is I would try and change it.

diyguy...Mine is the same only gets dim on dark roads also than brite again.

I did push it up to 3 digits the other day and the (1) was brighter than the two (00)

Im having the same problem. I think its a loose connection bc I did take the HUD apart to fix it and now its dimming on its own.

Ive taken the speedo out a few times and never had this problem. Im thinking its in the HUD itself but untill i take the dash out again who knows. Seems this is a HUD problem after a few years of service but what else is new

I dont know where the sensor is, but here is some info from the rarely read owners manual.

The brightness of the HUD image is determined by
the light conditions in the direction your vehicle is
facing and where you have the HUD dimmer control
set. If you are facing a dark object or a heavily
shaded area, your HUD may anticipate that you are
entering a dark area and may begin to dim.
It is possible for sunlight to enter the HUD causing
all of the graphics to light up. The display will return
to normal when the sunlight is no longer entering
the HUD.

The problem we are having are with the HUD itself, nothing else.
