Pop the top off the shifter and there's a demon key underneath it. Pry it out with a screwdriver and then the **** will unscrew.

I gotta think that if you search for "demon key" you'll find plenty of info. Prying is best. DO NOT YANK on it... you'll get nowhere...

Some say putting some WD-40 or similar helps to aidein the removal but definately pry on it carefully. Use a locking pliers and pry on the bottom of them using the top of the **** as a base to pry against. Cover it with a heavy rag before prying.

Some have also used a vise grips and made a sliding hammer out of the adjusting screw by replacing it with a longer screw and a small weight to slide on it for a way to pull the key out. That seems like a good way to me.

Be patient...

Good luck!!

Clamp some vice grips on the demon key, and then while pulling and rocking, tap (bang) the side of the vice grips with a hammer. Will take you a couple but it will come out.

This was the only method that worked for me. Bang a hammer hard into the vice grips, with an upward motion. Vibration and upward stroke will eventually get it moving. Be patient.

Doesn't the A4 **** just have a staple holding it in place...at least thats all mine had. The staple is located at the bottom of the **** on the side facing the radio...put it in the 1st gear position and you'll be able to see it

yea vice grips and a screw driver through the vice grips so you can slap the vice grips upward. . . make sure you have the top off the car in case it gets away from you . . having a third hand or a buddy makes it easier
