Been thinking about looking into a side pipe exhaust similar to the ones on NASCAR cars (longer, but thin tip) out the side of my car. Not only would it be rather unique, but save weight. Has anyone done or thought of this? Would it completely melt the paint and body?
Beyond the potential for paint and body problems, you'd likely have a fitment problem. if you look at the underside of the car, you'll see that the bottom of the car is mostly flat.... except the channel that the exhaust currently lives in. You'd have to exit that channel and go along the bottom of the car to the sides (I assume you intend to exit the exhaust on both sides rather than just the passenger side like in NASCAR). Here are some issues:
1. Heat. The floor of the car is basically balsa wood sandwiched between thin sheets of aluminum.
2. Ground clearance. You'll lose clearance by whatever the thickness of your tubing would be plus the mounting method.
3. Since there would likely be no off-the-shelf product, you're looking at custom fabbing the whole deal.
Thanks for the reply. The clearance issue is my biggest concern and I figured I'd need a flattened tube witht he same cross-sectional area as the regular exhaust. This should dissapate the heat, but like you said that takes us into the floorboard. However, how is this different then having the full length exhaust following the floor?
Yes it would have to be custom, but since I really didn't plan on it having mufflers ot cats I figured it couldn't be too bad.
I would say due to clearance the only way to go would be what the Mercedes SLR Mc Laren did, namely having the exhaust exit behind the front wheel but some body work would be needed. It sure would look nice and radical.
