Default Occasional second gear woes

My '04 Z is beginning to experience, on occasion, slight difficulties going into second gear. Clutch is fine thanks to Ranger's post on maintenance. My car is still under warranty since it only has 19,000 miles on it. I fear that the synchro may be going. Should this be looked at by the dealer prior to any additional track time? Thanks.

It seems that my '03 always was just a little stiff going from 1 to 2. I tried changing to several different brands of trans fluid to see if it would make a difference. Only noticed marginally different results. I recently tried Royal Purple Synchromax fluid. It is definetely much smoother now, made a tremendous difference in shifting through all gears up and down. The trans never felt this good.

I can vouch for that! RP made a huge difference.

If the 1-2 shift balks when the egine oil temp is >100 degrees, then there is an issue. If you're running the original tranny fluid at 19K miles, I'd suggest changing it. The cost of doing that is on you.

After the fluid changei if the 1-2 problem persists, then it's becomes a warranty issue.

Tranny issues generally derive from (1) missed shifts under hard acceleration and (2) shifts made during incidents involving clutch pedal woes, where clutch disengagement is incomplete.

Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for recommendation; however, since the car is still under warranty I will replace with GM fluid this time.

Thanks Ranger. Last October the fluid was changed at 11,657 miles. Since I have put on almost 9,000 more miles which included 29 more passes down the quarter mile, I will change the fluid again. Should it still be a problem, it will be back to the dealer. I will let everyone know the results.

Also try adjusting the shifter (I am assuming it's stock). Very few people on this forum ever suggest that. The stock shifter has an alignment pin that locks it in neutral and then you loosen the 3 torx bolts holding the shifter, slide it around a bit until it "feels" right and tighten them back up.

I am paraphrasing the procedure, but it worked WONDERS for my 02 Z. Let me know if you need the details...

MD

PS I wouln't let the dealer do this. You have to partially disassemble your interior a bit. Do it yourself. The dealers always seem to break/scratch something when they get in your interior.
