Default Titanium Muffler Problem

While running an HPDE at Watkins Glen on Monday and Tuesday one of the outlet pipes on my right side muffler came loose. It hangs down like a wilted plant. It looks like the weld to the muffler body broke and the outlet can swing up and down. The dealer is looking for a local company that can weld titanium.

That really suggs. Sounds like you had fun doing it. Did the Z just fall out of warrantee, if not, why would they not just replace it, or is it a simple fix?

Its been out of warranty since last October and GMPP doesn't cover mufflers. Not sure what it will cost. The dealer found a local sheet metal shop that can weld titanium but I haven't heard how much it will cost to do the welding yet. The dealer has the car anyways since my power steering pump went bad also. An interesting 2 days at the track. Power steering pump failure, muffler failure and flat tire. I have to get it all back together for another event next Wednesday and Thursday.

The repair looks great. The sheet metal shop charged $71 for the welding. With muffler removal, welding and tax the total came to $149. Now I will be able to get to the track next Wednesday and Thursday. I know maybe I could have had a muffler shop put a straight pipe in place of the muffler until I could get a used replacement but I would have had to buy 2 mufflers from somebody for a couple hundred and then pay shipping. This was cheaper and less hassle all the way around given the time constraint. I didn't want to keep driving the car on the track with the pipe loose since it could have come off at speed and injured somebody or damaged somebody's car.

Yep. Titanium welding seems to have come a long way in the last few years. Motorcycles have offered aftermarket titanium exhaust systems for a long time. The first ones were exotic and somewhat fragile at the welds. Now they stamp them out like toasters with few problems...
