Who's using nitrogen in their tires? My mechanic says its better on the environment, tires and gas mileage. For a few bucks more per tire I guess its OK.

Your mechanic has been snorting nitrogen too long!
Race cars and aircraft landing gear. Other than that, it's not a big deal. If you're crazy about a dry inflater that won't corrode aluminum or magnesium wheels and won't vary as much in pressure, then get a bottle and fill 'em up. Also, since nitrogen has a higher molar weight than the oxygen and other gassses in air, it won't leak down as much over time through the body of the tire.

NASCAR guys do it because of the extreme heat they build up in their tires. Sometimes as little as 1/4 # makes a difference to those guys. I don't see any real the benifit to us though.
The environment : Tires and Gas mileage, only because it leaks slower so your tires stay properly inflated longer without having to add air,
Nitrogen Instead of Air
Nascar teams remove the air from the tires and replace it with nitrogen. Compressed nitrogen contains less moisture than compressed air. When the tire heats up, moisture in the tire vaporizes and expands, causing the pressure inside the tire to increase. Even small changes in tire pressure can noticeably affect the handling of the car. By using nitrogen instead of air, the teams have more control over how much the pressure will increase when the tires heat up.
