Default Urgent Dyno Question

Im getting my car dyno'd for the first time this weekend. what RPM should i take the car up to without doing any damage. i want the best HP reading but do not want to brake the motor trying to find out. From what i see the typical is 6000, will that probably be enough, or should i go less at first then work my way up?

I posted this in tech but wasnt getting much of a response seeing as i have to know pretty soon.

At MTI they bounce it right off the rev limiter

Take it to the redline, everytime I dyno'd mine, we went to the fuel cutoff, (6600 in the LS6).

The dyno operator usually has a helper who drives the car and you get to watch.

Correct. I have been to 4 different locations and had my Vettes dyno'd. At all 4 places, they had me sign a release form. They then "drove" the car while it was on the dyno. I have never seen anyone drive their own car while it was on a dyno.

I just get nervous bring the car to the limiter. You guys know better than I whether or not these cars can handle high RPMs... i just get nervous sometimes. ill let them do what they think is best.

I understand. I was really nervous the first time my car was on a dyno. It was my C4. It survived. My C5 has as well. You have to have faith in your dyno operator or find another place to take the car.

Here's an old pic of the C4 on the dyno. It was raining that day. It was an F body club dyno day. I felt so out of place and was very nervous. I put up some pretty good numbers and was happy at the end. The guys on the left are not associated with the dyno operator. They were just marveling at the paint on my C4 and how the water beaded up on it.

6k in these cars is fine (heck I've hit the rev limiter a few times while driving accidentally)...enjoy your trip to the dyno and let us know what numbers you get

I must admite I beat the poop out of my ls1 ws6 ALL the time and a handful of times I've totally spaced off and forgot that i had a m6 and forgot to (haha i said **** before I corrected and typed in shift) shift and it hit the rev limiter BIG time. Don't worry about it man. ls1's are made to take abuse. It's not going to hurt your car at all. Man you sound like my friend with a DOHC 4.6 mach 1 who is afraid to take it above 3,000 rpms and those rev to 7,000!!!

To the rev limiter and keep you fingers crossed. You should be fine.

I've never heard of an LS1 blowing on a reputable tuner's dyno.

minority opinion here: we baby our c5 (except for every now & then on x-way on ramp ). not sure i care to have it on a dyno. every time i see a dyno photo, i see those 2 straps on the rear of the car & wonder if they'd do anything if by chance the car took off. anyone ever heard of that? bub

I saw a car take off in a vid once but it was putting down 1500rwhp some insanely built old style hotrod setup. Damn thing was 6 feet off the ground (dunno why they had it up that high lol) and it almost flew off.

I have seen only once where the vehicle was 'hurt' by ruining to the rev limiter.

This was in Bowling Green (CI VI).

A brand new C6 was on the dyno. ran it us - and holy smoke, the electronics in that baby went away!

Funny for the onlookers, not so for the owner.

Unless you have other issues with your Vette, having it dyno'ed by a reputable tunner is really not that all of a problem.

Unless you have an aftermarket cam, it is probably a waste of time and gas to go past 6000.

Hit the limiter. If it breaks then it needed to be fixed anyway.
