Nice product, good luck!!!
Indeed, working from the prototype we created in our shop, we were quoted $9k for the mold alone. By the time all the fine tuning was done, the mold came to just over $13.5k .... OUCH! Some call it Vette Tax, when in reality it's simply the cost of low production runs.

Just curious, glad to see this product out there.
At this point, we have several other projects in the works as well. We'll probably keep to more basic products, but who knows what the future may bring.

We assumed some folks may want a paitable version of our overlay. Being that we would be required to buy an entire pallet of non-textured ABS Plastic, which yields a 112 piece product run, we wouldn't be able to sell enough. However, I am expecting to receive a prototype of one unit that I requested they turn inside-out. So the texture would be inside and the smooth side would be on the outside face of the product. Once it shows up, we'll see just how smooth and paint ready the face is. I've already tested the adhession to the textured side and it prooved successful. So if they come out smooth enought to paint with even minimal body work, we'll have a paintable version to offer as well

I have said this many times it the cost of low production runs but people here on the forum tend to ignore those posts. They also are more concerned with GMPartsdirect shipping costs even thought GMPartsdirect to your door price maybe be $30-50 less than other suppliers for the same item.

A body shop can smooth out the textured ABS for you before they paint it.

Very true. But if we could offer them nice and smooth, it would keep the cost lower of having them painted. I'm guessing that a few coats of sandable fill primer may be yet another option.
Thanks for your input,
Richard

After you sell a few of those, get that girl some new clothes. Looks like she outgrew the ones she's got.

The only concerns I have would be dirt getting caught under there and fouling the paint via vibration and having the black plastic fade to gray like every other black plastic applied to any vehicle. At that point, it's just another cosmetic item to maintain.

Both issues have already been thought through and addressed. I wouldn't want that to happen to mine either. First of all this product is mounted in an area that would be exposed to limited UV rays. Secondly, the ABS we selected does have a UV protective coating. And 3rd, most of us don't leave our Vettes sitting outside like our DD's. And of course if it ever does begin to discolor, there are numerous products on the market just for this.

In regard to dirt and dust becoming trapped behind the overlay, due to our placement of the foam adhesive, it's not very likely to occur. I suppose anything can happen, but we've given this product a lot of thought over the last year to avoid such issues. But thanks for mentioning these potential issues. I didn't think to include them in my original post

Handily addressed my concerns. I'm impressed!
