Default Remove key and wait 10 seconds and then

Got in my C5 for a nice Friday drive to work today. I backed out about 10 feet when the car quit on me. The message center said remove key and wait 10 seconds. I did and it started up fine but when I got about 5 feet it died. This time it said "service column lock". They did the warranty work on the column lock 3 months ago. I tried a number of times to get going and I keep getting the same thing. It dies and says service column lock. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? It is a 2001 Coupe 6 speed. I still have a little time on my extended warranty. Thanks in advance!

A very well known problem. Buy a column lock bypass kit from Corvettes of Houston for $50 and be done with it. I'd put the car back in the garage until you get it.

You need to call your dealer and have them tow you - it sounds like you don't have the latest level of recall work done on your column lock. This is what the Column Lock Bypass kits were made to prevent.

If you had the latest recall preformed the problem is probably a faulty K harness. Get the CLB and be done with GM's crap. You probably couldn't get the dealer to get it going the weekend so you might as well order the CLB now.

Invest the $50 or so and get a CLB - easy to install and you won't have to worry about the recalls that just don't seem to work from GM.

That happens to me every week or two. I did take it to the Chevy dealer about a year ago and they said they did whatever the latest "fix" was for it.

After it happens and I pull the key and count to 10, it starts right up and never a problem after that.

?????

I will be ordering CLB today but my column never locked. The message says "service column lock" and the car car cuts out every five feet or so. Just curious if it could be something else. The dealers around here are not the most competent IMO.

My vette had the CL Recall done before i bought it. I went to go to work one day, and the same thing happened to me. Pull Key Wait 10 Sec, and then it was locked. After looking on the forum, i did what some members suggested, and jerked the steering wheel side-to-side. And to my suprise it unlocked, and hasn't since. Might wanna try that before calling the tow truck, and then install a CLB! Good luck!
