Default flat fix??

anyone without run flats- do you carry goo and a pump? heard there's a small kit you stash in the car for trips that can actually get you going in the event of a flat. anyone got one??? where are they available? thanks, dave

I used to carry a can of 'Fix-a-Flat' in my bike's saddlebags during my active Harley riding days, but don't in any of my four-wheeled vehicles. The 'Fix-a-Flat' type stuff works okay if the puncture is small enough, but is useless for anything larger than a standard nail or screw hole.

Also, many tire shops will refuse to repair tires which have been coated with this type of messy goo along the tire's inner liner...indirectly forcing one to purchase a new/used replacement tire. This type of stuff is only meant to get one to the nearest tire repair facility anyway and not as a permanent fix. I'm also unsure if this type of stuff may have an adverse effect upon the TPM sensors, since it does have a tendency to clog-up valve stems.

BTW, 'SRT-8' owners are stuck in the same situation - no spare tire and no 'runflat' tires on the ground; however, their vehicles do come equipped with a small compressor and some of this type of tire sealant compound. The majority have hated to utilize this stuff when the unfortunate circumstance presented itself, and some have actually resorted to carrying an extra tire/wheel when traveling on long trips.

Yes...used the stuff in a flat run-flat and it worked great. Tire shop was not real happy when they patched it...LOL

mr. dj- that is the "kit" of which i spoke. what do you think is the harm of using the sealant that comes with it? same as fix-a-flat? my bub with a crossfire has the same plan about the compressor... dave

It's basically the same stuff...the can of sealant just attaches to the compressor's air line. It's a slick set-up, but can become a real big mess if the operating instructions are not followed completely...take no shortcuts.

Check this out:

Probably what I'm going to be doing since I just went to non-EMTs. I also understand that the "goo" used by Continental is more Tire Sensor friendly them some of the others.

Just get a tire plug kit, less than $10.00, to go with a small compressor.
Easy to fix, and easy to remove for a real patch. Practice on an old tire so your ready. Extra plugs can be purchased seperately at Wal-Mart.

I carry a small air compressor and a plug kit - both available at Wal-Mart. I also carry a cell phone and have emergency road service on my insurance. I do not carry any fix-a-flat sealant since I am running the pressure sensors.

There it is. The best tire repair set up you can have in the Vette. I have had the pleasure to use this twice on the road.
Don't use the messy sealants. Makes more work, may damage your sensors and, has the potential to over heat and explode, or freeze and explode.

I bought this kit for my Z06. I also have one for my Kawasaki. Only about 20 bucks. http://www.slime.com/smartspairs/index.php

Couldn't have said it better. Tire repair sets are very affordable. Fix-a-flat will cost you in the long run.
