For a little while now I've had a noise I can't ignore anymore coming from the back end of the 98. It sounds like it comes from the right rear, and it sounds like tire noise... like I'm running mud terrains or something. Only noticeable at speeds over 40. It increases in pitch as I go faster. As I turn the car back and forth on the highway as if I'm warming up the tires, it only makes the noise when the weight of the car is on the left side. So, no weight on right side... right rear makes the noise. This make sense? Any ideas? Bad bearing? What the dealio?
I wish like heck it was a tire issue like some of you guys suggest but the Kumho's only have like 25K on them, and they look just fine. If in fact we are looking at a shot wheel bearing, how much cash we talkin? Easy fix?

I got my rear bearing with hub (came as a unit) for around $300- 320 at the dealer. Put it in myself. It wasnt that bad. I cant see it being more than 2 hours labor at a shop. Ahhhhh, the sound of silence.
Classic case of bad wheel bearing... had the EXACT same symptoms on mine. When you unload the bearing the nosie goes away. So if when you slalom to the right (weight loads to the left side) the bearing is quiet.
Do yourself a favor... Autozone carries Tilden (sp?) brand hub/bearing assemblies for the car. They are the SAME part used in the oem application and are under $200 each vs. almost $400 from the dealer. The install isn't too bad.
I track my car so I replaced my fronts at 55k as they got a little vertical play in them, and my RR went bad a few years back and that's when I got the roaring that would go away when I'd slalom the car.

It does indeed sound like a wheel bearing, I believe it a sealed bolt on hub and it's not very hard if you're mechanically inclined and have the proper tools...and don't forget the beers!
Looks like I've got a diagnosis... I love this corvetteforum stuff! I'm going to check into getting the part and tackling it myself... sounds like fun. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks again!
Bad wheel bearing. Had the same issue, it was smoked.
also have a 98 with about 68 on the clock, have the same sound on mine like bad tires, changed to new tires and the same sound, like my sound is coming from the left side in the back,if you take the wheel off the car can you look at the hub and tell that it is bad ????

Jack the car up and try and wiggle the tire/wheel. If it moves you have a bad wheel bearing. Probably.

mine did the same thing but at low speeds and when turning. it was the rear end, but nothing bad it was the limited slip and i added some limited slip addative from gm when i changed the rear end dope and everything was much better. try it out befor you replace wheel bearings, should be much easier and cheaper for ya, and provably needs to be done anyways.
i agree bearing is bad but you should also check the tire as well cause it will be off the car when you change the bearing and yes autozone is half the price
