My 2002 coupe has a starnge problem.... when I hit the gas pedal to accelerate hard I get a pinging sound... like low octane or timing is out. My vette has been doing this for about two weeks now .... it runs great otherwise.
I really sounds like low octane gas but I ONLY use super premium and have tried several brands / locations to see if it was a certain fuels... no change.
Could it be:
1. Dirty injectors - it runs great except at heavy or WOT. Milage is good, 19.5 city 22.5 highway.
2. Air filter - just a hunch - my car has 18K on it and the filter was changed at 9K.
3. Timing - I have not had to even think about a car being out of proper timing since I had my 69 427 / 435. I don't even know what we do now....
Please let me know what to check out before I go to the Chevy store and go through the Vette tax dance!

Today we tune cars via software to the PCM to fix timing issues.
Honestly I think you just got a bad tank of gas seeing as this just started happening. I would run that tank out, fill it with new stuff and see how that goes.
Still pinging? May want to try a catch can, all years of car can benefit. The car tends to ingest a bit of oil that is running through PCV right into the intake manifold. Consuming oil = diluting a/f ratio, thus making for a lean condition and the dreaded spark knock. A catch can will catch that small bit of oil to keep your car from feasting on it
A tune can't hurt either - and you would probably gain some hp/tq from a tune also. At the very least, datalogging the car on a dyno run/street run will show exactly where that knock is, and from there you could pull some timing out to keep it from pinging. When I first got mine it would ping at low rpm's, high load (like accelerating in 6th). Scanned, pulled a couple degrees, we're cool now.
All gas is not created equal.
I know you said you tried different gas and different states. I had the same problem with pinging. Although I use the highest octane available, I sometimes went to a local, non-national name gas station. One in particular comes to mind El Cheapo. Started getting the pinging even though I didn't go there regular. I don't try to save a penny on gas any longer. I only go to stations that have a national reputation. They use detergents and have years of experience and a reputation to uphold. Also, try running Techron through there and see if it gets any better.
And stay away from Wawa for a while too. I never had a problem with them but maybe they changed their formula.
I had the same issue since the car was new, so no chance of carbon build up on the head to slightly increase compression ratio. I finally got it fixed when I had the car dyno and tuned, they retarded the timing slightly and all is well.
Has anybody used the pour in the take injector cleaners?
I don't think it's a matter of bad gas as I use super premium from only the majors.... Sunoco, BP and Shell... I wanted to know if anyone has good or bad experiences with the additives that you buy to add to your tank every so ofet...
