Default Pulled motor pics!

After a lot of oil being eaten up by this motor, i finally decided it was time to pull and see what REALLY is happening. Oil consumption was about 1qt every 250 miles or so. My MTI Z07 427 C5R had the common problem of craptastic oil rings being used... also, i think my head gasket is on its way out as well. So, its pulled. Took 10 hrs total. I could prolly do it again in 6-8hrs. the bigest pain was gettin the long tube headers out of the way. Other then that, it was great and smooth...didn't break a thing either. another huge annoyance was all the fluids leaking left and right.

so here are some pics. click on the link below to go to my gallery. there are more pics on the following page.

Look at the inside ports on the heads, its all oil!!! compare it to the outer ports ... i have a pic of the spark plugs. one is the outer one, the caked on black one is of the inner cylinders... when i got to the intake manifold, the outer egdes had oil caked all over it. this is the first indication that inner cylinders may be bad.

http://www.vetteaction.com/modules.p...920&g2_page=10

So, now the plans are to give it to DRM. he will re-fresh it for me. (he is local to me, lucky me huh!!!) I think i will go with a different cam. Depending on how bad the cylinder walls are from the rings being gone, i may bore it out to a 447ci. Can we say 600rwhp, N/A!!! But we'll see....

any thoughts guys? should i do anything else while the motor is out? i plan on painting the frame rails red and my FAST manifold red. Which is another question, how do i paint the manifold red?

enjoy the pics!

Aj

Default motor

Saw a post a while back of painted intake. Was cleaned, sanded, primed, sanded, primed again and painted with heat resistant primer and paint. Looked like a lot of work, but looked good.

Good luck with getting the motor freshened up. You sure were using a lot of oil.

Sorry to hear about the issues and good luck on the rebuild and I am glad I stayed away from MTI as I was going to go there for my buildup

Sorry to hear about your problems AJ. I have heard nothing but good things about DRM. Looks like a lot of unhappy customers from MTI. Infact, I am exchanging PMs with someone right now who is going through hell after spending almost 40k with MTI

THANKS GUYS!
just to note, i am in no way slandering MTI. though i have not gotten any help from them when i asked for info regarding this car i bought and their motor package and what it consisted of. i was pretty pissed off, but whatever, its done with..

BUT now, my car is going to be a DRM 427. I'll officially be changing the logos too.

at any rate. thanks for the kinda thoughts guys! I'll be sure and post up details as my monster returns.

I have had the exact same experience with MTI and my engine package.
I just haven't been able to get them to answer the phone. Especially Eddie Hasskle.

quite honestly my friend, just give up..they won't do a damn thing for you. they will not stand behind their products, so screw em'! i have tried contacting them many times, no returns... im sorry to say, but we are of the few unfortunate who have endured hassels of motor packages from MTI. Now, i highly doubt anyone will buy anything from them, at least off this forum...

Anyways, i went to DRM today, doug and i pulled the heads off... GOOD NEWS! the pistons and cylinders are OK! a simple hone job will clean it up nicely. the rings were completely washed out. i mean, GONE! Randy @ DRM is going to get pics posted up, once i get them, i'll post them on here.

as of now, doug and i talked about just puttin a large cam in. the other internals are top quality and don't need to be touched. The correct tune and a 100% operational motor, i should be making 500rwhp+ solid!

more details to come!

AJ... what is it about the piston/ring/motor setup that cuased it to eat so much oil and destroy itself?

Cobra: i have heard/read that early production motors from MTI (2003 or so) were built using crappy oil rings. then, if not seated correctly, well, you'll have a lifetime of problems if you don't fix it. not to mention other components going bad. My motor was one of those unlucky puppies.

so really, quite simply, MTI used bad rings.

for me, i also had pretty bad tuning. i had slight detonation in one cylinder and the others were pig rich.
