Take the key to a GM dealer or locksmith and have them "read" the chip for you.

Default Key Fob

If, as it sounds, you're looking for the key fob, you can buy them very reasonably somewhere such as ebay.
You didn't state your model, but the newer ones 2001-04 are very cheap (around 10 bucks) and you can easily program them for your car.
If you're looking for the KEY, then I agree with above.
The 98-99 FOBS are more expensive with the passive feature.
Fobs are the remote transmitters, VATS is the coded key system. Hope that helps.

VATS key codes
You need to read the resistance of the key. If you have a digital volt meter, set it on ohms mode and measure the resistance of the pellet on your key. The BCM is programmed for a specific resistance value. The BCM measures the voltage drop across the key pellet. If it is within +/-10%, then the car will start.
The 15 resistor codes are:
Key# Value (Ohms)
1 392
2 523
3 681
4 887
5 1130
6 1470
7 1870
8 2370
9 3010
10 3740
11 4750
12 6040
13 7500
14 9530
15 11800

Once you know the code - you can buy another key or do whatever.

CAUTION: If Mid America is buying these keys from those Corvette Key turkeys that got ridden out of here on a rail, FORGET IT. SouthernCarParts was hawking them recently, and just announced the Corvette key went teats up recently.

Unless Mid America has a large stock ON HAND, save yourself the aggravation and forget it.

Ive heard a lot of talk about this corvette key situation and a lot of people have been getting ripped off appreantly. I ordered mine from Southern Car Parts back about 2 weeks after they announced it and got mine a few days ago. Even though it took them very long to ship it, I finally got mine.
