Hi silvzo6 -

I am not a welder, but I think there is a very specific technique and equipment required to weld Ti, so iit might save you some headache to make sure you have someone who can welid it for you before going forward.

That said, you could look on ebay for one of the tragically cut Ti exhausts that show up there really cheaply (because of the welding issue...) and use that as a donor for some ti pipe.

Just an idea.

best regards -

There's nothing special about it. I would tig it. Just make sure you get the correct rod for Titanium.

Hi Slider -

Don't you have to weld it in inert gas? no tungsten arc etc to contaminate?

Can you get good results just using tig?

This is something that would be interesting to understand.

I recently had to have the Ti muffler on my Z repaired. I took it to the dealer and they sent it out to a sheet metal shop to get the titanium welded.

A sheet metal shop may also have or be able to get the correct size pipe for you.

I'm seriously considering doing this. Does it HAVE to be titanium (the connecting pipe)? Anyone who's done this?

Default Welding Ti

Check out this thread of my modded Ti's.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1490307
It welds like stainless (TIG with titanium wire) no need to back fill the pipes as we're not building a nuclear reactor. Titanium tubing has dropped out of the market because or the war. Our air force has a lot of equipment which is built from titanium. I used to buy it from McMaster Carr with no problem and about 6 months ago they ran out. I just used cut systems which was mentioned earlier.

Sounds grrrrreat and cool vid. So is the weld the only thing you've done to your exhaust? If so, does it drone at all? Reason I'm asking is I DON'T want drone on the highway..

mark896,

I basically did an A&A mod which is to provide some straight through bypass and gathered my output into two tips instead of four. My exhaust tone definately became louder, especially at wot, but there is absolutely no drone. GM did an excellent job with the titanium sysytem creating a number of dead end chambers with the right length and volume to effectively cancel out the droning frequencies even with a bypass.

Excellent. Then first I will add an x-pipe to eliminate the "burble" and popping, then do the bypass. Now I just have to find a welder...

We have a large manufacturer of Ti tubing locally. I'll check out what's available Monday.

Sandvik Special Metals of Finley, WA.

What size diameter/length would be needed?

You could use stainless steel if you want.

I called Tico Titanium, mentioned above, and spoke with Tim in sales...
I ordered 2 feet of 1.5inch x .035 tube(he's throwing in 2 more feet for free for my welder to "feel-out"). Also ordered .25lb (about 100 feet) of Ti welding wire (size .040). Total cost = $125

My buddy is a welder and is very interested in doing the job. After doing some OCD-charged research on Ti, it's not that bad to work with. You need to shield the bead with Argon..not bad for a TIG welder. You're supposed to use a trailing-shield with Argon to keep it "clean" until it cools under 800*F. Shielding the back of the welds (inside the pipes) is also recommended.

Because we're doing this on an exhaust, and not a nuclear reactor/powerplant/space-ship/pharmaceutical lab, the trailing shield and back-fill will be discarded. It should be sufficient...time will tell.
Once it's done, I'll report back.

At over $50/ft for Ti pipe, perhaps more for the thickness required for bending, it would not only be interesting...it would be astoundingly expensive!!!!

I'd bet a set of Ti headers would go for at least $3000, perhaps more.
